Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race 2025 route, date and best London spots to watch

by
Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race 2025 route, date and best London spots to watch

The renowned Boat Race is set to return again this year. Taking place in April, it'll see crews from Oxford University and Cambridge University battle it out on the River Thames.

The men's race was first held in 1829 and is one of the oldest and most famous amateur sporting events in the world. The women's race was established a century later, in 1927.

The event is now regularly attended by over 250,000 spectators and watched by many more on television. The 2025 edition will be the 170th men's race and the 79th women's race.

Date and timings

The Boat Race 2025 will take place on Sunday, April 13. Here are all the start times for the different races:

  • 1:21pm - Women's Boat Race
  • 1:36pm - Women's Reserve Race: Osiris v Blondie
  • 1:5pm - Men's Reserve Race: Isis v Goldie
  • 2:21pm - Men's Boat Race

The Boat Race course

Oxford University v Cambridge University Boat Race on the River Thames
The two main races will take place in the afternoon

The Boat Race course, known as the Championship Course, is 4 miles or 6.8 km long. It stretches between Putney and Mortlake on the River Thames in South West London.

It starts downstream of Putney Bridge and passes under Hammersmith Bridge and Barnes Bridge before finishing just before Chiswick Bridge. The crew who wins the coin toss before the race choses which side (or station) it will compete on.

Best spots to watch the Boat Race

The Fulham Fan Zone is one of the best place to watch the Boat Race. Split across Fulham Football Club's Riverside Stand and Bishops Park, it'll have no less than 14 screens available for everyone to watch the BBC coverage live.

The Hammersmith Fan Park is equally a great vantage point to watch the event. Both fan zones will be open from 11am to 5pm, and admission is free.

There are also a string of pubs and restaurants along the race route. One of them is Sam's Riverside, a modern British restaurant that overlooks the Hammersmith Bridge.

Guests at the front of the establishment will be able to watch the rowers speed by. The Blue Anchor is another popular spot.

It usually hosts an outside bar for those wanting a riverside view, while indoor screens show all the action. Learn more about the pubs along the course here.

Dagenham mum murdered her 2 children found dead in bunkbeds by their dad

by
Dagenham mum murdered her 2 children found dead in bunkbeds by their dad

A woman has been convicted of murder after her two young children were found dead in their beds by their dad. The bodies of Elijah Thomas, two, and Marley Thomas, five, were found in their Dagenham bunkbed on December 16, 2022.

Kara Alexander, 47, of Cornwallis Road, Dagenham, was found guilty at Kingston Crown Court on earlier today (Friday, February 21). She will be sentenced on Friday, April 11.

The dad was concerned when he had not received any responses to his messages and calls to Alexander - he was due to have the boys that weekend. When he visited their home, he was told by Alexander that the children were upstairs sleeping. He found the boys' bodies together, dressed in pyjamas, in the lower bunk of their shared bunk bed.

When he went downstairs for help, Alexander had run away through the garden into a neighbouring street. Paramedics couldn't save the boys as they had been dead for some hours.

The mum was located an hour later. Alexander claimed at the trial that she had placed them in the bath before they 'accidentally' drowned.

The cause of death was ruled to be interference with the normal mechanics of breathing through smothering and/or immersion in water. There was no evidence of forced entry.

Forensic analysis of Alexander’s phone - which was recovered from a filled sink - showed that it had been in regular use up until December 16 but on the day the children were found, no calls were made or messages sent.

Kara Alexander, 44, has been convicted of murdering her children

‘Our thoughts are with the boys’ father who found them dead’

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Waller, who led the investigation, said: “Our thoughts are with the family, especially the boys’ father who found them dead when he went to collect them for the weekend after Kara Alexander had failed to return his messages.

“No parent should have to go through such a horrific experience, and then have to listen to the detailed evidence highlighting what led up to these events. I would also like to praise those who were first on scene – our colleagues and the paramedics – who also experienced this traumatic event first hand.

“This has been a difficult investigation for everyone involved. This guilty verdict cannot turn back the clock but it does provide the children’s family with some form of resolution.”

Tefal Comfort Max Pan Set
Shoppers are praising the pans' non-stick qualities

The pans are coated with Power Resist coating for extra non-stick. There's also ergonomic stay-cool and anti-slip handles. The set is suitable for all hobs, including induction.

The set has 4.5 stars from 5,045 reviews. One person said: "I recently purchased the Tefal Comfort Max Pan Set, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision! This set includes a 14cm milkpan, 16cm and 18cm saucepans with lids, and 20cm and 24cm frying pans, making it perfect for all my cooking needs. The variety of sizes is great for everything from making sauces to frying up a family meal.

"The stainless steel construction not only looks sleek and modern but also ensures even heat distribution, which is essential for consistent cooking. I love that it’s induction-compatible, so it works perfectly on my cooktop. The handles are comfortable to grip and stay cool during cooking, which is a nice safety feature.

"Clean-up is a breeze as the pans are easy to wash, and they maintain their shine even after multiple uses. Overall, this set offers fantastic quality and value for the price. Highly recommended for anyone looking to upgrade their cookware!"

"This set of pans is perfect for my small family of three," another wrote. "They may be useful for a slightly larger family, but as most of the pans are on the smaller size, it will depend on what you intend to use them for. The set is very sturdy as I would expect from Tefal and we are all happy using them. The handles are comfortable, even for my arthritic hands and are not too heavy.

"The thicker bases hold the heat for longer and this took a bit of getting used to, when turning my gas hob down. The non stick is fantastic, on both frying pans, I slid a fried egg straight out on to my toast. This is Tefal's newest non stick and has been extensively tested and practically has no contamination from the non stick. This was another reason why I bought them. The lids all have steam vents to stop pans from boiling over.

"Overall, I am more than happy to have bought a good quality pan set from a good quality company that I know and trust." Of the negative reviews, one person said "I have used it once to make soup and it is already burnt. Terrible quality."

Alternatively, you can try the Ninja Extended Life Ceramic 5-Piece Frying Pan & Saucepan Set, which is £219.99. Elsewhere there's the 4-piece Always Pan and Perfect Pot set for £295.

The West London bus route so busy that children and the elderly 'compete' to get on

by
The West London bus route so busy that children and the elderly 'compete' to get on

West London commuters have called on Transport for London (TfL) to increase the capacity for a local bus route. Passengers claimed that the 235 service can get so busy that children and elderly people often 'compete' with each other to get on the bus, with some buses skipping stops altogether

Locals have started a petition that calls on TfL to upgrade the single-deck bus route into a double-decker service. Lib Dem Assembly Member Gareth Roberts presented the petition to the London Assembly at a City Hall meeting on Thursday, February 13.

The representative for Hounslow, Richmond and Kingston said at the meeting: "Starting from Sunbury village, the journey quickly becomes a competition to board the bus with both children and the elderly, among others, failing to do so because the buses reach maximum capacity too quickly."

The busy bus route serves Hounslow High Street

He added: "There is particularly an issue with capacity between Sunbury and Hounslow with buses often skipping stops." The campaign has received over 500 signatures from passengers. The route runs from Sunbury village to Brentford and passes through areas such as Feltham and Hounslow.

TfL passenger figures show that 5.3 million journeys were recorded on the 235 route from April 2023 to April 2024. Usage of the route has seen a net increase over the past few years, with 4.6m journeys for the 2022/23 financial year and 3.7m across 2021 and 2022.

The number of passengers seen on the route has also been noted as being significantly higher than single-deck buses seen on routes running throughout Zone 1, such as the 507 and 521. Rosie Trew, TfL's Head of Bus Service Delivery, told MyLondon that the transport authority was aware that buses are an important lifeline for millions of Londoners and that TfL was determined to ensure that people can rely on the capital's bus network.

She added: "Feedback is hugely important to us to help understand local issues. We continue to explore with the borough how we can ensure the bus network is fit for purpose and meets demand for bus services in the Feltham and Hounslow area, while also providing value for money for Londoners."

Drake to headline Wireless Festival 2025 with 3 London gigs

by
Drake to headline Wireless Festival 2025 with 3 London gigs

Drake is set to perform three huge concerts in London this summer. These will mark his first UK gigs in six years, with some albums reportedly set to be performed in full.

Drake is headlining Wireless Festival's 20th anniversary in Finsbury Park this year, which runs from Friday, July 11 to Sunday, July 13. In a deal reportedly worth millions, the 38-year-old will perform on stage all three nights of the festival.

Other artists who were rumoured to be headlining the festival this year included Lil Wayne, Burna Boy and Vybz Kartel - although it seems Drake was the name organisers were after. Last year, Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat, Future, J Hus, and 21 Savage took to the stage as headline acts.

A source told The Sun: "It's been months in the making, and initially, no one thought they could pull it off, but Drake is all signed on to headline all three days of Wireless. Bosses are naturally overjoyed and expect tickets to sell out in record time.

"Exact set lists are still to be worked out but one idea that has been passed about is that Drake will perform some of his albums in full for the first time."

Drake last performed in the UK back in 2019 when he played seven nights at London's O2 Arena as part of his Assassination Vacation tour. However, the rapper did make a surprise pop-up appearance at the festival during Future's set in 2021, although this summer will be the first time Drake will have played one of his own gigs since.

The announcement comes only days after rapper Kendrick Lamar made a dig at Drake during the Super Bowl halftime show. During the show, Kendrick, who has been in a feud with Drake since 2013, dissed his rival several times and even brought his rumoured ex-girlfriend Serena Williams onto the stage, as well as SZA, who did date Drake in 2009.

Tickets for this year's Wireless Festival will go on sale next week, costing £113 per day. The pre-sale, for those who have signed up, will go live on Tuesday, February 18, at 12 p.m.

Fans with the Three mobile network can try and get one slightly earlier when tickets go on sale at 12pm on Monday, February 17.
