Knifeman still at large after man, 20, lured to South London street and brutally murdered

Knifeman still at large after man, 20, lured to South London street and brutally murdered

A knife killer is still at large after a young man was lured to his death in South London. Julian Ebanks, 20, was stabbed to death on Kender Street, in Greenwich, only 90 minutes after his return to the capital, following an escape earlier in the year. Police believe he was brutally murdered due to a 'disagreement', but the man jailed for baiting him to his death gave the force no explanation.

Ishmaiel Kallon, 23, was sentenced to life with a minimum 22 years at Woolwich Crown Court on Friday (December 13) after he was convicted of murder at the end of a four week trial. Jurors heard how detectives from the Met's murder squad used witness accounts, mobile data, and intelligence to track down Julian's killers.

Kallon called Julian in the hours before the attack, with the intention of luring him into the open outside his address in Kender Street, jurors were told. Julian was then brutally knifed by another man while Kallon acted as a spotter. In a statement released by Scotland Yard this week, a spokesperson said: "Enquiries are still ongoing to locate the other man."

'Dangerous individual'

Julian had left London in fear of his life earlier in the year, but returned for a family birthday party and was only in London for 90 minutes when he was killed, the court heard. The Met says Kallon never explained why Julian was murdered, but analysis of Kallon's devices revealed the attack was fuelled by a disagreement between the parties in earlier 2023.

Ishmaiel Kallon
Ishmaiel Kallon will spend at least 22 years in prison for murdering Julian Ebanks

Kallon was arrested on August 10, 2023 and appeared at Bromley Magistrates' Court the next day charged with Julian’s murder. Detective Chief Inspector Martin Thorpe, who led the homicide investigation, said: “Kallon is a dangerous individual, who had no qualms about luring another man to his death.

"Our thoughts of course remain with the loved ones of Julian - we know this has been an extremely difficult time and we will continue to offer them our full support. I am pleased that as a result of our investigation we have delivered justice for the Ebanks family by ensuring the person responsible for Julian’s killing will spend a considerable time behind bars.

"I would also like to commend the outstanding work of my team. Their incredible dedication and many long hours analysing CCTV and phone records meant that Kallon was identified and arrested only six days after the horrific attack."

Cheapest turkeys from UK supermarkets including Asda and Tesco and when to buy in time for Christmas

by
Cheapest turkeys from UK supermarkets including Asda and Tesco and when to buy in time for Christmas

With Christmas just around the corner, many Londoners have already started their preparations for the big day. From festive lights and trees to the all-important turkey, it's best to get everything sorted in advance to avoid any last-minute panic.

Of course, the turkey is the centrepiece of any Christmas dinner, but with the ongoing cost of living crisis, people will be looking to save where they can. MyLondon has put together a handy guide on when to buy the cheapest turkeys from Tesco, Asda, Lidl, Aldi, Sainsbury's, M&S, and Waitrose.

The list mainly features turkey crowns as these are often the most affordable option across all stores.

Aldi

Aldi turkey crown
The Aldi turkey crown is currently on offer

An Ashfields Small British Turkey Crown weighing between 1.5kg and 1.9kg is currently on sale for £12.39 down from £13.49 and meets high welfare standards. The cheapest whole turkey weighs between 2.8 to 4kg and costs £13.79, reduced from £13.99. It must be kept frozen and not re-frozen once defrosted.

Defrost the turkey in the bag at the bottom of the fridge before use and do not defrost it in a warm room. Before cooking, make sure the bird is fully thawed, with no ice and fully flexible legs.

Asda

Over at Asda, a small British Turkey crown weighs between 1.5kg and 1.99kg and is currently £12.80, down from £15.50. Make sure to add it to your order by December 16 to get it in time for Christmas.

The most affordable whole turkey at the supermarket is priced at £14.50, down from £16 and weighs approximately 2.6- 3.8kg. This small basted turkey can feed between four to six people, depending on their appetites, and once frozen, it should be consumed within three months.

Amazon

Amazon isn't just for Christmas presents

The online megastore offers a Gressingham whole frozen turkey that weighs 5kg. This frozen bird, reared in East Anglia, costs £20.00 and is currently available.

Lidl

At Lidl, a Birchwood large whole turkey is priced at just £2.95 per kg. Weighing between 6.5kg and 7.5kg, it will be available for purchase from December 19.

It meets Red Tractor Farming Standards criteria, but there's no mention of how many people it feeds, and it can only be bought in-store.

Marks and Spencer

Turkey crown
M&S has closed its online orders

'Marks and Sparks' have already closed their online Christmas orders, so you'll have to go in store to see what they have on offer. Last year, their least expensive offering - a British Oakham slow-cooked turkey breast joint - weighing 1.2kg cost £32, so definitely on the more expensive side.

Sainsbury's

Sainsbury's medium fresh Turkey crown is priced at £26.25-£34.83, weighs between 2kg and 3kg, and is currently available for online purchase.

The most affordable whole bird is the Small Whole Basted British Frozen Turkey, tipping the scales between 2.6kg and 3.8kg. It's perfect for a gathering of four to seven people, but remember, it should only be cooked from chilled.

Waitrose

At Waitrose, there's no fixed price for a small whole turkey with giblets, as it swings between £20 and £28. However, it averages out to about £6.96 per 1kg. The weight varies between 2.5kg and 4kg.

Hassan Sentamu trial day 4: Elianne Andam Croydon case resumes as friend gives evidence

by
Hassan Sentamu trial day 4: Elianne Andam Croydon case resumes as friend gives evidence

As the trial into the killing of 15-year-old Elianne Andam continues, jurors are set to hear another afternoon of evidence at the Old Bailey. On Monday (December 9), prosecutor Alex Chalk KC opened the case against Hassan Sentamu, 18, accusing him of murdering Elianne in 'white hot anger' after she grabbed a Tesco bag from him in a 'gesture of solidarity' with her friend.

Sentamu, a Croydon College pupil of sports science, admits to manslaughter, but denies murder on the basis of diminished responsibility due to autism. He also denies possessing a blade in a public place, on the basis he had a 'lawful' reason.

At the outset, Mr Justice Cheema-Grubb told jurors: "His case will be that the killing was caused entirely by a loss of self-control because of his Autism Spectrum Disorder had substantially impaired his ability to exercise self-control."

This week the court has heard from prosecutor Alex Chalk KC, and a cross examination of Sentamu's ex-girlfriend by defence barrister Pavlos Panayi KC. Jurors also heard live and written evidence from witnesses, including an off-duty bus driver who ran to Elianne's side and gave her first aid, as well as the first responders and a police officer who arrested Sentamu near his home in New Addington.

The latest bit of evidence came from Elianne's friend, who described the moment Elianne grabbed a Tesco bag from Sentamu and ran off down the street.

She said: "Just before he caught up she dropped the bag. He didn't stop and get the stuff he just stabbed her.

“He caught up to her and stabbed her in the back, in the back of her neck, of her head. I remember that for a fact because we all stood there… we just thought he was punching her and then I must have shouted ‘Oh my gosh he’s got a knife’.

“He stabbed her in the back of her head and then he stabbed her chest and then she must have lifted her legs up to try and like block him and she was covering her head and he stabbed

“She fell to the floor and she was grabbing her neck. Now she’s on the floor she’s saying ‘Stop stop stop’ screaming ‘stop stop stop’ and she’s still getting stabbed, stabbed, stabbed, stabbed. That all happened in literally seconds.”

Gregg Wallace latest as former Masterchef contestant shares his comment that left her ‘stunned’

Gregg Wallace latest as former Masterchef contestant shares his comment that left her ‘stunned’

Journalist and broadcaster Aasmah Mir broke her silence about her stint on Celebrity Masterchef alongside Gregg Wallace, revealing she hadn't spoken about his "inappropriate behaviour" until now. The former BBC contestant took part in the famous kitchen contest back in 2017 and has come forward alleging that Wallace made derogatory comments while on set.

Sharing the details during a chat with Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley on Good Morning Britain, Mir described an instance during a pause in filming: "In front of everybody, the judges, the crew, the other contestants were quite far behind me..." She went on to detail how Wallace asked if she was from Radio 4 in what started off as amiable chit-chat but quickly turned sour when he allegedly remarked: "Tell her from me, she's a sexy *****."

Madeley was visibly stunned by the story, covering his face and uttering: "Oh gosh," as Mir talked about the uncomfortable hush that ensued, only interrupted by her anxious chuckle, reports Birmingham Live.

Continuing her story on ITV : "There was a silence. And then I laughed awkwardly because I just remember thinking, 'This is mad'. I wish I hadn't laughed, but I did." She added that nobody commented before the direction came to resume the show. Mir reflected: "I just remember thinking 'am I going mad?'"

'I took my children to Winter Wonderland London and the total price left me in shock'

by
'I took my children to Winter Wonderland London and the total price left me in shock'

A father has documented his very expensive family day out to Winter Wonderland. In total the family spent hundreds of pounds on rides, food and activities at one of London’s most popular Christmas destinations.

Daniel O’Reilly, also known as Dapper Laughs, visited Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park with his partner and three daughters. The family say they spent a whopping £775 on the day including travel costs.

Dapper Laughs, who is a highly controversial social media personality, said: “That’s nearly £800 which is more than enough to get an all-inclusive holiday for your family in Benidorm.

WARNING: Video contains profanity

“Was it a good day out? Of course it was. The kids got some cool memories and we all had a good time as a family. Was it worth the money? Was it b*******!”

Some of the most shocking prices featured in the video include £15 to go through a fun house and £25 for a go on a roller coaster. The family also spent a staggering £60 to have six turns at playing darts.

Food and drink proved to be no cheaper. Dapper Laughs says that the family spent a shocking £32 for four crepes and £28 for the same amount of hot chocolates.

A set of three noodles also cost £36, while a hot dog was £10. The family did take part in 11 different games and activities, including a trip to the circus, as part of the grand total.

Perhaps most surprising was the £25 which the family spent on parking for the day. Dapper Laughs did also include the £125 the family spent on train tickets in his total.

Each year Hyde Park is taken over by Winter Wonderland. The festive fair is always filled with rides, games and delicious food.

However, the event is notorious for costing a little more than the average Christmas market. With so much on offer, people often take on challenges to have a fun day out at Winter Wonderland on a budget.

This year the fair opened on November 21 and is set to close on January 5. Tickets need to be booked in advance - the prices vary for timings and ages.

Winter Wonderland includes highlights this year such as the world’s largest transportable rollercoaster - Munich Looping. There’s other other activities to choose from as well such as Ice Mountain and a traditional wave swinger.

Elianne Andam murder accused blames autism for stabbing Croydon schoolgirl, 15, in teddy bear row

by
Elianne Andam murder accused blames autism for stabbing Croydon schoolgirl, 15, in teddy bear row

A teenager accused of stabbing 15-year-old Elianne Andam to death in a row over a teddy bear has blamed autism in his defence to murder. Hassan Sentamu, 18, lashed out at Elianne with a kitchen knife during a post-breakup meeting in Croydon town centre with his ex-girlfriend and her group on September 27 last year, the Old Bailey was told on Monday morning (December 9).

The defendant, who was studying sports science at Croydon College, has admitted manslaughter but denied Elianne’s murder on the basis of 'loss of control' because he has autism. At the outset of the trial, Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb said the key issue for jurors will be to decide if Sentamu is guilty of murder of manslaughter, and whether he lawfully carried a knife.

LIVE: Elianne Andam murder trial updates

"The admission means he must be guilty of murder or manslaughter," said the judge, adding: "He also admits carrying a kitchen knife, but claims he had a lawful reason. The issue for you to decide whether he is guilty of murder or manslaughter.

"His case will be that the killing was caused entirely by a loss of self-control because of his Autism Spectrum Disorder had substantially impaired his ability to exercise self-control."

But prosecutor Alex Chalk KC told jurors they may feel the 'dreadful attack' was a result of Sentamu's 'white-hot anger' after he felt 'disrespected' in public by girls on the day of the killing and previously. The barrister said the 2020 autism diagnosis, and Sentamu's 'disrupted childhood' was not disputed, rather it was their relevance to the case.

"We will be noting very many entirely non-violent and law-abiding people in society have autism, and disrupted childhoods are sadly not uncommon," he told jurors, adding: "We will suggest to you that they do not and cannot sensibly amount to an excuse, justification or defence to the murder of Elianne Andam."

'Short fuse'

The defendant, then aged 17, was already armed with the kitchen knife when he took the bus from his home in New Addington, South London, to the Whitgift Centre on the morning of last September 27, jurors heard. He was on his way to a meeting with his ex-girlfriend, who he had split up with about 10 days before, and her group of friends, which included Elianne.

Mr Chalk told jurors: “The purpose of the meeting was to exchange belongings. (The ex-girlfriend) in particular was anxious to recover her teddy bear.”

During the meeting in a car park at the Whitgift shopping centre, Sentamu’s ex-girlfriend, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, stuck with her side of the bargain. She handed over a plastic bag containing his belongings but the defendant arrived empty-handed, without her teddy bear, jurors were told.

Mr Chalk said Elianne was 'aggrieved' so took the plastic bag back from Sentamu while he was walking outside the Whitgift Shopping Centre. “It was a gesture of solidarity with (her friend) that cost Elianne her life," said the prosecutor, adding: “The defendant chased after her, cornered her and used the kitchen knife to stab her repeatedly."

Prosecutor Alex Chalk KC

Elianne suffered a 12cm wound to her neck, severing the carotid artery, and died an hour later. CCTV footage captured the attack, including Sentamu running from the scene and disposing of the knife. He was arrested 90 minutes later.

Sentamu had a “short fuse” and on the day of the killing, he came to the end of it, jurors heard. The prosecutor said: “His calculated decision to bring a knife to the scene meant that the consequences of that outburst for Elianne and her family were utterly devastating.”

Mr Chalk said the victim was a popular schoolgirl and according to one of her friends: “Everybody loved Elianne.” Members of Elianne’s family sat in the well of the court as Mr Chalk outlined the case against Sentamu.

The Old Bailey trial before Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb continues.
