Councillor says new Nandos application is 'an improvement' on previous McDonalds plan in upmarket Croydon high street

Councillor says new Nandos application is 'an improvement' on previous McDonalds plan in upmarket Croydon high street

A planning application has been submitted for 62 Westow Street, currently occupied by Poundland, in the heart of Crystal Palace’s upmarket Triangle area. The new proposal, from popular restaurant chain Nando's, comes after McDonald's withdrew their plans for a takeaway-only restaurant at the same site, following significant community opposition.

McDonald's plans, revealed in January last year, raised concerns among residents and businesses. Many feared that a fast-food outlet would detract from the area’s unique character. That application, which ultimately fell through, came three years after the fast food chain was rejected in its last bid to open up a takeway-only restaurant on the upmarket Croydon high street.

At the time, residents saw the application as inconsistent with the Triangle’s mix of independent stores and more premium dining options. Issues around traffic, litter, and the impact on the local environment were also highlighted.

Poundland Crystal Palace
According to Councillor Bonham, Poundland is not planning to renew its lease on the 62 Westow Street premises

Interest in the Westlow Street site comes following news of Poundland's decision not to extend its lease. A closing date for the branch has not yet been announced.

Despite the previous backlash, news of Nandos' new application appears to offer a more suitable option for residents, according to Claire Bonham, the Liberal Democrat Councillor for Crystal Palace and Upper Norwood

Bonham told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) of her thoughts on the new proposals. She said: “I am keen to hear from residents as to their views on this planning application.

"During these difficult economic times, shops like Poundland have an important part to play in helping people save money on everyday items. That said, the application from Nando’s is clearly an improvement on previous plans for a takeaway-only McDonald’s restaurant, which was rightly withdrawn.

"Increasing footfall in the Triangle is important to support all businesses, and so I will be studying these proposals very closely. I encourage residents to let me know their views on these plans by dropping me an email to Claire.Bonham@croydon.gov.uk or writing to me via Croydon Town Hall.”

Birds Eye issues urgent recall warning over popular frozen item

by
Birds Eye issues urgent recall warning over popular frozen item

An urgent recall has been made by Birds Eye over allergy concerns. The recall concerns a batch of Goodfella's Stonebaked Thin Garlic Bread, sold at Co-op, due to undeclared milk.

The mislabelled package contains cheese garlic bread not mentioned on the label, which could pose a health risk for those with milk allergies. The Food Standards Agency notice stated: "The garlic bread has been mispacked with a garlic bread that contains cheese. This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents."

While most children outgrow cow's milk allergies, which affect 2-3 per cent of babies, it can cause severe reactions, including potentially life-threatening anaphylaxis for some individuals.

Birds Eye issued the product recall

The implicated products have the batch code 5020 and a best-before date of December 2025. The FSA advises: "If you have bought the above product and have an allergy or intolerance to milk, do not eat it. Instead return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund."

Goodfellas has issued an apology for any trouble caused but notes that no other batches or product lines are involved, reports the Express.

It's essential information for customers as even small traces of milk can set off allergic reactions, which are often manageable with antihistamines or an adrenaline auto-injector pen.

In other product recall news, Farmfoods had to recall packs of 50 Cocktail Sausage Rolls last month after discovering the batch actually contained cheese and onion rolls. Furthermore, Sainsbury's and Asda had to recall packs of McGhee's Family Bakers six Scottish Brown Rolls over allergen concerns.

'This discounted bouquet of LEGO red roses made our Valentine's Day even more special'

Amazon has slashed the price of a highly praised LEGO set. Originally £54.99, the LEGO Botanicals Bouquet of Roses is now £34.99.

Elsewhere, you can get the set for £54.99 at LEGO, £41.99 at Hamleys, and £46.75 at Argos. The LEGO flowers are a great alternative to the traditional Valentine's Day bouquet of roses.

The set comes with 12 roses and four baby's breath sprigs to build. Of the roses, four are in full bloom, four are blossoming, and four are in bud.

LEGO Botanicals Bouquet of Roses
The set comes with a dozen red roses

The set has an impressive 4.8 stars from 2,393 reviews. One person said: "I’ve been a LEGO fan for years and have bought several sets in the past, but this Bouquet of Roses caught my eye as a gift. Inspired by how much I enjoyed those previous sets, I decided to get this one as a Valentine’s Day gift for my partner – and it was a brilliant choice!

"We built it together, which made the day even more special. The instructions were clear and straightforward. The finished product is stunning and looks fantastic as a display piece in the centre of our kitchen (alongside our other flower LEGOs). Delivery was quick but I did use Prime, and the set came very well packaged with no damage to the packaging. Sometimes, when you order this kind of stuff the box gets scuffed etc.

"I am pretty happy with this product, really enjoyable activity with my partner. Go watch something or put on some music and build away."

Another wrote "When I saw these I knew I had to buy them. They were a nice easy build, a little repetitive as it’s the same basis for each rose except the different head. The outcome is amazing though. With the amount of roses you get the price is very good for the product.

"I went and purchased a vase the day they arrived to place them on my side table (a vase isn’t included unfortunately hahaha). I only wish the stalks were a little longer and as most vases are rather long so I’ve had to balance them on the edge. If you’re looking to get these as a gift for the other half then don’t think twice, they’re the perfect gift!!

"One hundred per cent would recommend to any LEGO lover or if you want a romantic gesture to give to that lucky someone!" The only negative commenter from the UK who left a message said "Good item, but there were a few Lego bricks missing. Had to go to Lego’s website and order replacements."

Alternatively, you can try the Roses Flower Bouquet Building Set With Vase, which is £26.27 on eBay. If you'd rather opt for the real thing, get the Dozen Red Valentine's Roses Bouquet for £30 at M&S.

Shoppers love Seasalt Cornwall's 'eye catching' cardigan that's 'very good quality'

by
Shoppers love Seasalt Cornwall's 'eye catching' cardigan that's 'very good quality'

A striped cardigan that's perfect for both winter and spring has caught the attention of shoppers who enjoy colourful wardrobe staples that are equally practical as they are stylish. The Pinwell Striped Cardigan Made With Lambswool from Seasalt Cornwall costs £75.95 and is gorgeously striking with its warm colour combinations.

Designed with a pink and red stripe - a duo that clashes in the best possible way - the cardigan's colour pairings don't stop there. Adding more drama to the casual look, the garment's trim is bold in a earthy, olive green hue which makes for a lovely contrast.

The bright knit comes in a wide range of sizes from 8 to 28 and is made out of cosy and super soft lambswool (80%) and recycled nylon - for added strength. The cardigan has a medium weight, ensuring it keeps you warm in the chillier months while the regular fit makes it a great choice for layering.

Its rounded crew neckline makes it a great choice over a white tee - with the t-shirts collar poking through, adding brightness - and your favourite jeans, you've got a statement yet casual ensemble. Swap out jeans for a satin skirt and boots and you've got a more work-appropriate look.

It's important to note that the cardigan must be hand washed in cold water due to its woolly make-up - this is, we believe, to prevent any shrinkage.

While we absolutely love the pink, red and green option - it screams springtime - it also comes in a black, white and orange 'maritime mix'.

Having only recently launched on the brand's website, there aren't many reviews to go off, but the seven that are currently on there show the garment's quality and style. With five stars across the board, the only slight qualm from shoppers was that the cardigan has a more boxy fit than anticipated, causing it to be slightly 'shorter in the body' - although that didn't ruin it.

One happy shopper gushed: "Really vibrant and cheering in gloomy weather. I am size 18-20 and the 18 was a perfect fit. I'm only 5'2" so the slightly cropped style really works for me. I've never paid so much for a cardigan before but I loved the stripes in the image, as well as the pop of orange, and the actual cardigan didn't disappoint, it was exactly as depicted."

Another echoed the praise and said: "Beautiful cardigan, very good quality, love the stripes I just love a bright eye catching jumper/cardi. It's a boxy fit so shorter in the body but I'm getting used to this style & love that it has a high percentage of natural fibres."

"I was very pleased with this cardigan because it is so versatile," remarked a third. "I particularly liked the bright colours around the edges and the feel of the soft wool. Although expensive , I know that I will be wearing it a lot. I have washed it on a delicate wash inside a net bag because I was worried that it may bobble. I am pleased to say it didn't."

Another glowing comment read: "Beautiful cardigan, bright colours, soft and true to size. Looks fabulous on. Highly recommend. . . true Seasalt quality."

Get it here from Seasalt Cornwall.

Fancy a different combination of colours? Urban Outfitters' Dakota Stripe Knit Cardigan costs £42 and comes in a pink-purple and rust orange colour. Meanwhile, if varying shades of green is more your thing, Next's Green Stripe Soft Touch Fuzzy Knitted Cardigan is £43 here. If simple stripes are more your thing, Uniqlo's Souffle Yarn V Neck Short Cardigan is on sale for £19.90, here.

Dad, 64, runs whole TfL transport network including London Underground, Overground, DLR and Elizabeth line

by
Dad, 64, runs whole TfL transport network including London Underground, Overground, DLR and Elizabeth line

A dad reckons he's the first person to have run London’s entire transport network - covering almost 500 miles in four months.

Dave Thomas, 64, covered the 12 Tube lines, six Overground lines, the tramlines, the Docklands Light Railway - and a cable car.

Having taken a selfie at each station for evidence, the retired NHS worker is now hoping to hear back from Guinness World Records about whether his achievement is record-worthy.

But he says he's been in touch with Transport for London (TfL) who believe his efforts are "unique."

The dad-of-two has raised nearly £6,000 by taking on the challenge, which will be donated to the Chance for Children charity.

Dave Thomas
He started last year at Morden station

Dave said: “I wanted to raise money for charity, but I couldn’t just ask people to sponsor me to run a marathon because I do those all the time.

“I contacted Transport for London and they think it is unique. People have run the Tube lines before but no one has ever run the Tubes, trains, DLR and the trams.

“I promised the charity £2,500 and I have almost got £6,000 now so they will be very happy about that.

“I was absolutely amazed by how many people donated. I have been gob smacked by the amount of money and support that they have given.”

Dave was inspired to start running ten years ago after a troubling visit with his GP revealed that he was overweight and at risk of getting diabetes.

The news was a wake-up call and through running Dave managed to lose an impressive three stone.

He added: “I was going down the line of diabetes and I didn’t want to go down that road. I started running and I lost three stone. It is a very good way of keeping fit.”

One day, when he was tackling his London transport themed jigsaw puzzle, inspiration struck to try and travel between all the places before him- by running to all of them.

Preparation started immediately, and it took Dave around four months to plan the route, which he says was the hardest part of the challenge.

Dave Thomas
He headed straight to the pub after finishing

In total, the trips added up to 485 miles across 40 runs, each taking between two and three hours to complete.

Dave started at Morden in September and ran to Battersea Power Station on his first trip, saying that all of his friends thought he was “bonkers”.

Some of the hardest runs along the way came from the newly added Elizabeth line - which meant Dave had to travel as far as Reading.

Battling rainy English weather and cold conditions, he says he almost gave up many times but that the money donated kept him motivated.

He added: “There was one Sunday in October where all my friends were in the pub or at home with a Sunday dinner and I was running from Upminster to Barking in the pouring rain and cold.

"It was around my hundredth run and I thought ‘how am I going to do another 400 of these.’

“There has been some really challenging times. It was difficult but I kept going. The money people were giving kept me going- I had to do it for them.”

Along the way Dave was supported by his wife Sue, 55, who shares his love of running, and his two children Daniel, 26, and Emma, 24.

The final stop on the journey was his home station of High Barnet, which he ran to from Kentish Town along with 15 friends on Sunday (January 26).

Arriving at the finish line, a crowd of supporters gathered to cheer him on and take him to the pub for a few pints.

Dave said: “I felt so proud that I had done it. There were a couple of times when I thought about giving up.

“About 20 people met me at the finish line as a surprise which was lovely. We all went to the pub to celebrate. I think many people will be pleased it’s over as well as me.

“It was really emotional crossing that finish line. I mostly felt relief. I was overcome by all the people there.

"When I saw everyone there I had a tear in my eye - it was fantastic.”

In terms of future plans, Dave is set to run the Tokyo marathon in five weeks’ time, marking the fifth major world marathon that he has tackled.

While in Tokyo, he will get the opportunity to visit the Chance for Children charity in person to see what his money has achieved.

He is also considering running to the rest of the London train stations which aren’t part of TfL - once he has recovered.
