Fights break out as protesters shouting 'England 'til I die' try to reach the Cenotaph

Fights have broken out between police and groups attempting to reach the Cenotaph. Reports state that a large crowd of people bearing St George’s flags was seen walking along Embankment shouting “England till I die”.

A line of police attempted to stop them from reaching Whitehall but the group pushed through, with some shouting “let’s have them” as officers hit out with batons.

PA reports that the group appears to have reached Whitehall where the Cenotaph is situated. Many more are pushing through, shouting “forward”.

A post on X also seems to show that Tommy Robinson - whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon - is present in Central London.

This comes as 500,000 people are expected to march in central London in support of Palestine amid renewed violence between Hamas and Israel. The Met urged marchers last week to 'urgently reconsider' holding the event on Armistice Day in a bid to mitigate against potential tensions with counter-protesters.

Police say, to protect national remembrance events and locations, particularly the Cenotaph, an exclusion zone has been put in place covering Whitehall, Horse Guards Parade, the Westminster Abbey Field of Remembrance and other relevant areas, in effect banning people from these locations.

Man beats 'XL Bully' over the head with shovel on Hackney estate as neighbour warns 'this is not the first time'

Man beats 'XL Bully' over the head with shovel on Hackney estate as neighbour warns 'this is not the first time'

A masked man who battered a dog 15 times over the head with a shovel was caught on camera by a neighbour in the flats above. Harrowing footage, taken from a home on Pembury Place in Hackney, shows a man in a green tracksuit armed with a garden spade whacking a large brown XL Bully-type dog over the head before sticking the garden tool in the dirt.

The thumps could be heard across the estate and gave the dog a nose bleed. It prompted the video taker to call police who came and saved the beaten mutt, leading it out the garden and into the back of a police van. Footage taken of the rescue featured cheers from neighbours who said 'Aw he's beautiful', 'Aw he's got a bloody nose' and 'Aw look how friendly he is'.

Alongside the video on X, crime awareness channel London and UK Street News wrote: "[The person filming] raised the alarm with police and was gathering evidence. This is not the first time. Please if anyone has any information I would be grateful."

The dog was beaten in a garden at Pembury Place in Hackney

Police confirmed they were called to the area after reports of a man assaulting a dog in the rear garden of a property just before 11am on Wednesday (November 8). When they got to the address they found the dog with facial injuries and took it to an animal hospital where it remains in care in a stable condition.

A Met Police spokesperson said: "No one was present at the address but a man has [on Thursday, November 9] attended a police station and been arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty. Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting CAD 2303/8NOV."

South London residents 'furious' at plans to build on nature reserve with rich wildlife

South London residents 'furious' at plans to build on nature reserve with rich wildlife

South London residents are “furious” at plans to build a pair of carbon capture plants on a local nature reserve, claiming the area cannot afford to lose any more land. The Cory Group has revealed plans to build two carbon capture plants on Crossness Nature Reserve in Bexley borough.

The new plants have been designed by the waste management company to capture carbon dioxide from the two waste processing facilities run by the group in the area. Planning documents said the two waste facilities are predicted to process 1.5million tonnes of non-recyclable waste a year, with the new plants aiming to capture 1.3million tonnes of carbon dioxide produced by the facilities annually.

CPRE, the Countryside Charity, said in a statement that residents were “furious” about the new plans, which they claimed would build upon six acres of grazing marshland habitat in the nature reserve. Laurence Pinturaunt, 61, is a local resident and a member of the Friends of Crossness and Erith Marshes group. She said she has previously worked on fundraisers to preserve marshes in South East London, with Crossness Nature Reserve including barn owls and kestrels among its wildlife.

Ms Pinturaunt told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS): “The Thamesmead marshes, which are made up of Erith Southern Marsh and Crossness Nature Reserve, are part of the last remnants of grazing marshes in South East London. As such, they are very significant. That is a habit that has been disappearing very fast and most of the sites have been lost to industrialisation.”

A local claimed the nature reserve has over 600 members

She added: “They have very rich wildlife. There are water invertebrates, they have ditches which are full of water voles and are homes to kingfishers. The marshes also provide mud flats, which are really important habitats for waders and water birds, some of which travel thousands of miles from Africa to come and breed and forage on those sites.”

The resident said that Crossness Nature Reserve has over 600 members who regularly visit the area, including birdwatchers, joggers, and residents taking their horses to graze. She said locals were “hugely worried” about the project, fearing local waterways could be contaminated by chemicals on the site, and that the carbon capture plants will become a “white elephant” for the community.

She said: “These incinerators have reduced recycling rates in London for the last 20 to 30 years. We haven't been recycling as much as we should have, because we have these incinerators burning rubbish on our doorstep.”

She added: “The main thing for us is the loss of biodiversity which cannot be replaced once it is destroyed. Already the marshland sites in South East London are very fragmented and degraded. We cannot afford to lose any more.”

Planning documents from the Cory Group said the project would result in a net increase to the area of Crossness Nature Reserve by six hectares, which would be retained as green space. They added that key stakeholders such as the Friends of Crossness Nature Reserve were being consulted on the development.

They added: “We need to mitigate for the loss of land within the Crossness Nature Reserve and impacts to areas of open land. In addition, we would like to provide improvements to both biodiversity in the local area and access to open spaces for local people. There are a range of opportunities within and around the site and in Thamesmead.”

Richard Wilkinson, Cory’s Project Director, told the LDRS that carbon capture technology was the best way for energy from waste facilities to reduce CO2 emissions by storing them under the North Sea. He said the project would be carbon negative overall and was in line with the Government's plans to reach net zero emissions by 2050. He said the current facilities on the site process non-recyclable waste to generate electricity and prevent such waste being exported overseas or sent to landfill.

He said: "A project with this level of ambition doesn’t come without challenges, and while it will use land owned by Cory, part of our project currently requires building on paddocks that form part of the Crossness Nature Reserve and are situated immediately adjoining the energy from waste facilities that would be decarbonised. Our plans include the opportunity to enhance existing land within the managed nature reserve as well as increasing its overall size, growing it from its current 25 hectares to 31 hectares. Our proposals also include opportunities to improve green spaces in the local area."

He added: "To ensure that our proposals take into account the views of the local community, we are running a public consultation on our plans until November 29, which includes engagement with local organisations such as Crossness Nature Reserve. I would encourage people to learn more about the project and provide feedback to our consultation. You can do this by visiting corydecarbonisation.co.uk.”

'My 6-year-old daughter saved my life during severe asthma attack that left me close to death and gasping for air'

'My 6-year-old daughter saved my life during severe asthma attack that left me close to death and gasping for air'

A six-year-old girl saved her mum's life by dialling 999 when she suffered a severe asthma attack that could have been fatal. Cali-Maii Ball, from Hornchurch in east London, woke up in the middle of the night to sounds of mum Lauren desperately gasping for air.

She immediately picked up her mum’s phone and called 999. “I think my mum is having an asthma attack”, she told London Ambulance Service call handler Laura Lehmer.

“Mummy is really struggling to breathe.” Cali-Maii promptly gave the 999 call handler her exact address and unlocked the door to let the crews in. London Ambulance Service medics arrived in just four minutes and immediately started treating Lauren, 25, who was losing consciousness.

She was put on life support to help her breathe. The paramedics then took her to Queen’s Hospital on blue lights, where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and put on a ventilator.

Lauren said: “Cali saved my life. If it wasn’t for her calling 999 so quickly and the paramedics intervening so promptly, this would have been a really different story.

“I’ll never be able to show them all how grateful I am for saving me.” After the incident, Lauren remained in hospital for six days.

To reduce the risk of similar episodes, she is now due to start a new injection treatment. This week Cali-Maii was given an award by London Ambulance Service crews Sam Taylor and Danielle Robinson, who answered her cry for help.

Sam said: “Cali-Maii is a real hero. A few extra minutes could have cost her mother her life. Lauren was very close to going into cardiac arrest and it was Cali’s incredibly quick cry for help that saved her.” The mother-of-two, who was diagnosed with asthma at the age of six, has called for parents across the country to teach their children what to do in an emergency.

She said: “Cali’s actions were life changing and if our story can help even one more parent get the help they need in a life-threatening situation, I’d be over the moon.” Teaching children when to call 999, learn their home address, and how to unlock the front door when the ambulance arrives can help save lives.

Ex-Boots employee says 'don't underestimate' £44 beauty advent calendar with Liz Earle and No7 in first-look review

Ex-Boots employee says 'don't underestimate' £44 beauty advent calendar with Liz Earle and No7 in first-look review

December is less than a month away, and if you're planning on getting a beauty advent calendar, the Macmillan 24 Doors of Joy might just be what you're looking for. Discounted for Black Friday, the Boosts' best seller has had £46 off its original price.

The Christmas countdown is now £44 - reduced from £90 - and gives shopper £175 worth of products. It is packed with 24 products, some of which are full sized.

The festive haul can be bought online or in store and is filled with items from popular brands such as Liz Earle and Ted Baker. Ex-Boots employee Bethan Shufflebotham has given her opinion on all the brands included in the calendar in our sister-site The Mirror.

Liz Earle products are one of the highlights of the calendar, according to Bethan. The latter features features a travel sized version of the iconic Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser, worth £8, as well as a pure cotton cloth, which are not only perfect for travelling and weekends away, but also offer those discovering the brand a chance to trial the cleanser before committing to a full size.

No7 products are another highlight of the Macmillan 24 Doors of Joy, whose largest portion is dedicated to the brand. The Christmas countdown has eight full sized and miniature products, including the Beautiful Skin Revitalising Hand Polish which feels a bit too similar to the Soap and Glory Hand Food - meaning the calendar contains two similar hand creams -, but the Skin Softening Foot Scrub and Protect and Perfect Lip Care are a great addition.

Makeup wise, the Lift & Luminate Triple Action Primer, worth just under £18, is ideal for keeping all those festive holiday looks in place. Skincare hasn’t been neglected either, with a No7 Protect & Perfect Intense ADVANCED day and night cream duo.

And "don’t underestimate" some of the more affordable beauty buys included in the festive haul. One of the drugstore products you get is the the very well-pigmented Sleek i-Divine Palette Royal Flush, which is a good alternative to the viral Naked Heat palette from Urban Decay.

Here’s a list of everything you can find inside the Macmillan 24 Doors of Joy beauty advent calendar :

  • Sleek MakeUP Fierce Felt Eye Liner Zodiac Black
  • Soap & Glory Bright & Beautiful Brightening Sheet Mask

'A £9 hanging dehumidifier saved my flat after all our shoes and coats got mouldy'

by
'A £9 hanging dehumidifier saved my flat after all our shoes and coats got mouldy'

It's the words no one ever wants to hear: "Tom, all our shoes and coats are mouldy." Was I upset? Yes. Was I surprised? Absolutely not. There's been a leak in my roof for two years that no one wants to fix, we open our washing machine door with a piece of string and the extractor fan hasn't worked since before I moved in like four years ago. The fact I didn't think we'd need a hanging dehumidifier by our coat rack is probably my bad at this point.

When I say mouldy, I mean it - the fuzz covered unused shoes and our autumn jackets, leaving our much more used winter coats untouched. It's one of those things where if you're not checking up on it, suddenly it pounces on you. Blitz washing all of our coats on 60 degrees and hoping at least a few of them would come out not shrunk, we needed a solution. But thankfully, a mum came to the rescue.

Specifically my flat mate's mum, who sent us a care package of hanging dehumidifiers. I try to stay sceptical about any product because I want you guys to trust me and also we live in a hell world of cons. But these... actually work. And they're so cheap too - a pack of 12 is just £9.90 on Amazon right now from 151 products (4.6 rating out 2,606 reviews), or there's Nyxi's pack of six (4.6 out of 3,950 reviews).

READ MORE: Amazon's 'small but mighty' dehumidifier that 'costs pennies to run'

The 151 products holds 500ml while the Nyxi has 230g (which equates to 230ml), so you're probably better off with the 151 option. Since using these, we've stopped having the problem completely, so I genuinely can't recommend having them around enough if you're plagued by mould.

We're experts at dealing with water in flat because, as I mentioned in the intro, I live in an unregulated hell. Other than the paddling pool we use to collect water from the roof leaks, we also need to deal with the sprouts of mould creeping in around it and the windows.

Obviously we use a big boy dehumidifier to deal with a lot of the heavy lifting (specifically the Blyss corded, £97.19 on eBay). It's a bit loud but it does the job, as seen in the tank at the end of the day. But there's also a spray I've sworn by since I went to uni: Dettol Mould and Mildew remover.

Three bottles of Dettol anti mould spray
Dettol mould and mildew removal is vital for keeping the mould at bay, just follow the instructions carefully

You can get a three pack on Amazon for £9.99 or a single on Tesco for £3.50. Make sure you follow the instructions with this one as it contains bleach, but all you need to do is spray on the affected area, wait, and rub it off.

It works like magic. In an instant the mould is gone and we got back to breathing properly again. In an ideal world I wouldn't have to rely on hanging dehumidifiers and mould spray to have a home that is liveable, but we have to do what we have to do.
