The Wheel star Sabre's real name, tragic admission and ordinary job outside of Gladiators

The Wheel star Sabre's real name, tragic admission and ordinary job outside of Gladiators

Gladiators rebooted on January 13 this year, bringing back the original 1992 hit series. With it came a whole host of new Gladiators including Sabre, who will feature on Michael McIntyre's The Wheel, though it's not known which episode she will join.

Gladiators presented by Bradley Walsh and his son Barney, episodes see four contestants - or ‘contenders’ - battling it out in a number of gruelling events against the ‘Gladiators’, who are athletes or bodybuilders.

There are a number of stars on the show, such as Sabre, real name Sheli McCoy, who will feature on Michael McIntyre's The Wheel. She’s a self-described ‘grafter’ and trains between 16 and 19 hours per week.

But outside of Gladiators, the 36-year-old has a very normal job. She runs a gym in Dundee, Scotland, from where she shares clips of her workouts on Instagram.

But things haven’t always been easy for Sheli. The athlete confessed that she was attacked by her ex of eight years more than 10 years ago, leaving her with black eyes. After the abusive relationship, she was four dress sizes larger than she is now and used serial binge eating as a coping mechanism, she admitted.

The revelation was made in January during a Q&A session broadcast to her 195,000 Instagram followers.

It came after she shared a picture showing her huge transformation, reported MailOnline. She said: “I became very unhappy and unhealthy in a terrible relationship that ended very traumatically and I gained a lot of weight.

“I promised myself I would do better, be better and become a role model and a leader, to make myself and others proud and that's what I feel I have done.”

Sheli also has high hopes of inspiring women with her work. She said: “I truly hope Sabre will inspire and empower the younger generation of strong capable females just as the Gladiators I once watched inspired me to be a confident athletic woman. It is Sabre's time to shine - here come the powerful girls.”

BBC Ambulance staff in tears as crew members threatened by patient shouting 'I will kill you'

BBC Ambulance staff in tears as crew members threatened by patient shouting 'I will kill you'

BBC Ambulance aired a terrifying moment on Thursday's episode as they shared the sound of a patient assaulting their colleagues.

During the latest instalment, the East London ambulance crew were out at work when the distressing sounds of a patient assaulting their colleagues filled their radios as they had pressed the emergency button.

A narrator explained: "When pressed, an emergency button on a paramedic's radio cuts off all other communications and broadcasts openly to all crews on the channel."

The ambulance workers were left in tears as they heard the terrifying moment the patient shouted "I will kill you" at their colleagues in a crew emergency, reports the Mirror.

The East London ambulance crew's reactions were shown and one member was left in tears as they said: "That's really distressing," as they heard their colleague shout, "Help, help, help," over the radio.

The shaken crew members were able to get to a police station, which was thankfully across the road from the patient, as they fed back to their colleagues: "Yeah, we're okay" after the terrifying attack. They were advised to stay at the police station and away from the patient.

London Ambulance Service took to their official Twitter, now X, account to share the harrowing moment, writing: "Physical violence against our crews in London soared in 2023 by 39% #Ambulance #WorkWithoutFear", adding: "All our ambulances have been fitted with CCTV, audio recording, panic buttons and new monitors to help protect staff."

Viewers were quick to share their support for the ambulance service after the distressing scenes as one person said: "So frightening. You guys are heroes", another wrote: "That was just horrendous to watch, truly awful."

A different viewer said: "Shocking, sending love, thanks, and strength to you all."

"It happens - one of the young paramedics talking about how they were assaulted and almost pushed out of a window by a patient. Just awful #Ambulance," someone else penned.

BBC Ambulance is a documentary series that follows "life and death decisions on the frontline - from control rooms to the crews on the street" as viewers meet the people making sure every second counts. The first series aired in 2016 and the series returned for its thirteenth season on Thursday night. In 2018, Ambulance won its first major award, the BAFTA for the best factual series or strand.

Ambulance continues on Thursdays at 9pm on both BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

BBC EastEnders' fans fume as soap icon leaves after huge 'plot twist'

BBC EastEnders' fans fume as soap icon leaves after huge 'plot twist'

Eve Unwin (played by Heather Peace) bid farewell to Walford on Wednesday (October 16) and returned to her Yorkshire roots without her partner Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal), leaving fans in suspense about her return.

Nish Panesar (Navin Chowdhry) orchestrated a visit from his and Suki's distant grandson Tye, marking his first appearance. The event brought the Panesars together in joy, welcoming their late son's child.

On Tuesday (October 15), Nish confessed his intentions to use Tye as a means to reconnect with Suki. However, he was incensed when he overheard his former wife joking with Eve that Tye wouldn't remember his grandfather due to his impending death.

In response, Nish began plotting revenge and made an enigmatic phone call, ordering an assault on an unidentified individual.

During her latest visit to the Square, Eve received a distressing call from her estranged father, informing her that her mother had been robbed and hospitalised, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Immediately, Eve arranged for her and Suki to travel to Yorkshire to visit her mother. However, upon sharing the news with her family, Nish reminded Suki that she would miss the rare chance to meet her young grandson.

As Suki and Eve were about to depart, Nish arrived at the house with Tye. Suki was overjoyed to see him, even noting Tye's resemblance to her slain son Jagvir (Amar Adatia).

Torn between spending time with her grandson or accompanying Eve, Suki suggested that it wasn't the appropriate moment for her to meet Eve's family.

Eve made the decision to leave Suki to enjoy Tye's visit and took off for Yorkshire solo.

She popped into the cafe before catching her train to bid farewell to Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner), who convinced her that heading out alone was the right move.

But as Eve began her journey to reunite with her father after twenty long years, EastEnders aficionados were less than pleased that such a pivotal moment unfolded away from the cameras.

Frustrated viewers took to social media to express their dismay. One viewer tweeted: "I'm so annoyed eve seeing her parents for the first time in 20 years is all OFF screen. it's something I've waited to see for ages."

Another vented: "The fact that they've made Eve see her parents for the first time in 20 years offscreen is c***. I'd really want to see that especially since Erica's death."

A different fan shared their vexation: "It just feels wrong that this is happening off-screen and has been rushed and pushed to the side. Yeah, it'll be good if we get some stuff involving Eve and her parents down the line, but we won't see the most important part. Why isn't this being shown?"

One more mused over the episode's handling of the storyline: "I have mixed feelings about today's episode. eve going to see her parents for the first time in 20 years happening off-screen is a huge missed opportunity by the writers, but this scene was so precious and heartwarming, 'our grandson'", adding to the chorus of critiques.

The European countries where drugs are legal or decriminalised including Portugal and Croatia

by
The European countries where drugs are legal or decriminalised including Portugal and Croatia

Drugs, their harms and whether the law should be changed to decriminalise some, or all of them, are debates that remain present in British politics, whoever is in power. Despite worries about young people exploited through county lines drug dealing, neither Labour nor the Conservatives have ever pushed for decriminalisation.

Groups such as Transform Drugs Policy Foundation continue to press the UK Government for changes, arguing that drugs should be under government control and 'out of the hands of organised crime'.

But changes in UK law have been minimal. From 2004 to 2009, cannabis was reclassified from being a Class B drug to the less severe Class C, before reverting to its former status. In November 2018, the medicinal use of cannabis with approval from a medical practitioner was legalised, but only in a small number of scenarios.

Recreational use of the drug remains banned. But the situation is different on the continent. Here, we look at five countries in Europe which have passed different laws in drug regulation.

Croatia

According to the European Union Drug Agency (EUDA), the Republic of Croatia is a transit route through which illicit drugs are often smuggled to western Europe. Heroin is usually trafficked from the production countries in the east to consumer countries in the west.

In January 2013, changes to Croatia's Criminal Code on drug use came into effect. Under the revised law, possession of small quantities of drugs for personal use was no longer a criminal offence but instead classed as a misdemeanour under the LCDA, punishable by a fine of €650 to €2,600. UEDA adds: "The judgment on whether the quantity can be classed as ‘small’ is made by the state prosecutor or court in each case".

Italy

In Italy, personal drug use was substantially decriminalised in 1993 following a referendum. Under the law, possession of drugs for personal use is a non-criminal offence, although the substances may be confiscated by authorities, and warnings, fines or suspension of drivers' licenses may occur.

In December 2019 Italy’s Supreme Court, the Cassation Court, decided “at home, small-scale cultivation activities [of cannabis] are to be considered excluded from the application of the penal code.” However, other drug supply is classified as an offence and is punished by six to 20 years imprisonment and a fine from €26,000 to €260,000.

The Netherlands

While technically illegal, in the last few decades, Dutch policy has been to openly tolerate recreational drug use, even possession and trade under certain circumstances. According to prosecutor guidelines, possession of cannabis products up to 5 grams will in principle incur a police dismissal, and the offence remains not prosecuted if it refers to possession for personal use of cannabis products up to 30 grams. Possession of harder drugs is likely to attract police attention and may lead to prosecution.

Portugal

In 2001, Portugal decriminalised the personal possession of all drugs. Possession of a limited quantity of drugs for personal use (up to 10 days of average individual consumption) is an administrative offence, punished by administrative measures with no detention. It may be punished with a fine (only for non-addicted users), or non-pecuniary sanctions. However, if the quantity of drugs is above the threshold of 10 daily doses, judges may refer the person to a state-sponsored rehab centre.

Switzerland

Switzerland began a shift in policy in 1991, based on the concept of harm reduction. In a bid to stop overdose deaths and the spread of HIV/AIDS, it decriminalised drug use and opened supervised consumption rooms where users could inject themselves with substances they brought in and exchange used needles for clean ones. Despite this, cannabis use is banned and the drug is only permitted if it contains less than one per cent of active substance THC in a quantity of less than ten grams.

EastEnders exit 'sealed' for fan favourite as Denise Fox drops bombshell

by
EastEnders exit 'sealed' for fan favourite as Denise Fox drops bombshell

EastEnders dropped a bombshell for Chelsea Fox on Monday (October 14) as her mum Denise unveiled a massive secret about the club crush.

Back in August, a near-death crush at Peggy's resulted in several locals getting injured including Lauren Branning (portrayed by Jacqueline Jossa) and Amy Branning (Ellie Dadd) - who experienced a cardiac arrest and is now paralysed.

The bar manager Penny Branning (Kitty Castledine) was immediately held responsible for the incident, causing her father Jack (Scott Maslen) to act frostily towards her.

However, it was Chelsea Fox (Zaraah Abrahams) who caused the bar to be overcrowded when she sold extra tickets to the event as part of a revenge scheme against Penny. Denise Fox (Diane Parish) has been aware of the truth for weeks but has begun to rekindle her relationship with estranged husband Jack.

In the latest visit to Walford, it was the morning after for Denise who had spent the night with Jack and was treated to breakfast, reports the Daily Star.

She was informed that the CCTV footage from Peggy's was entirely corrupted, implying there would be no evidence to exonerate Penny.

Jack reminded Denise that their divorce hadn't been finalised yet and suggested they consider reconciliation, but Chelsea was upset when she saw her mum leaving Jack's house.

Chelsea feared that Denise might reveal her involvement in the crush, but Denise assured her daughter that there was no evidence against her.

Amy had a tough time at her physio session and tensions flared when Penny turned up at the hospital, leading to a heated exchange.

Penny Branning EastEnders

Jack's frosty attitude towards Penny didn't help matters, clearly taking Amy's side in the family drama.

Feeling ostracised by her relatives, Penny made the decision to leave Walford for Paris, even with a police investigation hanging over her head. Her romantic interest, Harry Mitchell (played by Elijah Holloway), tried to persuade her to stay, but Penny was resolute in her decision.

Back at home, Jack and Denise came together, doing their best to support Amy in her recovery, but the atmosphere was shattered when Penny revealed her intention to depart from the Square.

The Branning household erupted into conflict as Amy kept pointing the finger at Penny for causing her injuries, and despite Denise's efforts to mediate, the situation escalated.

EastEnders is lining up all kinds of twists and turns next week on the BBC soap
Could Chelsea be arrested for the club crush?

The Branning family found themselves at breaking point, and overwhelmed by guilt, Denise felt compelled to come clean and confirm that Penny had been truthful all along about not being responsible for the accident.

"It wasn't her that caused the crush, that put you in the hospital," Denise confessed. "It was Chelsea."

With the police already probing the incident, questions arise: Will Chelsea's liberty be jeopardized? And will Jack take it upon himself to arrest Chelsea for the mishap?

Strictly Come Dancing's Nick Knowles voted off as judges save Shayne Ward

Strictly Come Dancing's Nick Knowles voted off as judges save Shayne Ward

Nick Knowles and his pro partner Luba Mushtuk have been kicked off Strictly Come Dancing after a dance off against Shayne Ward and Nancy Xu during the third results show of the series. Presenter Nick, 62, and Luba, 34, performed their Charleston again to 'Rain on the Roof' from the film 'Paddington 2', while singer Shayne, 39, and 33-year-old Nancy repeated their Cha Cha to 'Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)' by Sub Sub feat Melanie Williams.

After both couples had danced for a second time, the judges delivered their verdicts. Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse and Anton Du Beke all chose to save Shayne and Nancy.

With three votes in favour of the couple, they won the majority vote meaning that Nick and Luba would be leaving the competition. Head Judge Shirley Ballas agreed and said she would have decided to save Shayne and Nancy.

When asked by show host Tess Daly about their time on the show, Nick said: "I've really, really been surprised by how much I've loved doing it and by two things that happen. One is how much you care each week, and the other is how much you don't want to let down your partner. The only reason I could do this is simply because of Luba's changes she's been amazing."

Luba added: "I've never met someone as determined as you, and I remember you saying that if you do your best, you'll be very happy. I think you did more than your best. Thank you."

When asked by Tess about his partner Luba, Nick went on: "Luba's been amazing and just been so fabulous every day. And I should say thank you also to all the background staff, the physios, all the people that have actually got me through this week, and to all of my fellow competitors who have been absolutely astounding, beautiful people. There are some amazing dancers up there, and I will love watching the rest of the series."

Sunday's results show also featured a special routine from our fabulous professional dancers to Taylor Swift's 'Wildest Dreams', choreographed by Mandy Moore and starring Nikita Kuzmin and Karen Hauer as the leads. There was also a performance of 'Everything's Here' and 'Nothing's Lost' from Snow Patrol.

The remaining 12 couples will take to the dancefloor next week when Strictly Come Dancing returns on Saturday, October 19, with the results show on Sunday, October 20 on BBC One. Both of this weekend's episodes are available to watch now via BBC iPlayer.

Nick and Luba will be joining Fleur East and Janette Manrara for their first exclusive televised interview live on 'Strictly: It Takes Two' on Monday, October 14 at 6.30pm on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.
