Met Office experts predict storms set to batter London could cause a 'danger to life'

by
Met Office experts predict storms set to batter London could cause a 'danger to life'

Met Office weather experts have said that thunderstorms in the capital are set to possibly cause a "danger to life". Predictions also suggest that the adverse conditions could delays to train services, dangerous driving conditions and road closures and flooding of homes and businesses 'cutting communities off'.

The yellow warning covers this evening and tomorrow morning (Friday, August 18 and Saturday, August 19). Londoners have been told to prepare for potentially hazardous, rain, lightning strikes and hail between 8pm until 5am in the city, as well as areas further north in East Anglia and nearer the south coast.

A spokesperson for the weather service said: "There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes or hail. There is a small chance of fast-flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life.

Roads 'could be closed and bus services disrupted'

"Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services. Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures

"There is a small chance that some communities become temporarily cut off by flooded roads. There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost."

Residents have been advised to keep a close eye on weather updates and travel disruptions, and to plan any necessary journeys. In addition, those whose property may be at risk from flooding have been urged to prepare a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.

Further advice on the Met Office's website reads: "It's never too late to take action and prepare for flooding. Follow these 6 simple steps to protect your home or business.

  1. Check the flood advice in your area to know when and where flooding will happen
  2. Charge mobile phone devices
  3. Park your car outside the flood zone
  4. Prepare a flood kit to help you cope in the event of flooding to your home and business
  5. Store valuables up high, including electrical devices, important documents and furniture
  6. Turn off gas water and electricity supplies

"If you are trapped in a building by floodwater, follow these simple instructions to keep you and your family safe:

  • Go to the highest level in the building you are in
  • Do not go into attic spaces to avoid being trapped by rising water
  • Only go to a roof if necessary
  • Call 999 and wait for help"

Experts also describe what to do when driving. Advice reads: "It is safer not to drive in thunderstorms but if you must drive you can do this more safely by:

  • Slowing down
  • Using main roads
  • Using dipped headlights
  • Giving yourself more time to react on slippery surfaces
  • Keeping a bigger gap between vehicles"

The BBC too is predicting stormy weather in London but at slightly different times. The broadcaster's weather page suggests adverse conditions will hit the capital at 9pm this evening and last until 1am on Saturday.

Throughout, temperatures will remain at 20 or 21 degrees celsius, it adds.

M&S shoppers love 'gorgeous' £59 bomber jacket with so many 5-star reviews it sells out twice

by
M&S shoppers love 'gorgeous' £59 bomber jacket with so many 5-star reviews it sells out twice

With autumn fast approaching, it's time for a wardrobe refresh. The chillier weather is already beginning to sweep the city, so what better time than now to start investing in some cute layering items?

Marks and Spencer recently shared its latest contribution to fall chic with a Padded Bomber Jacket in a toffee colour. The bomber comes in three colours, including the rust look featuring in an Instagram post.

The supermarket shared the £59 jacket to its 2 million followers and it sold out. Fans loved the "quality" and "flattering" bomber and it is in high demand - though some shoppers found it to be much more oversized than they expected.

The high-street store captioned the post: "Tell your wardrobe the good news – The Edit’s latest drop is here." M&S then proceeded to list the outfit details for each look featured in the Reel.

Outfit 1:

  • Bomber jacket – T493026
  • Cargos – T591098T

Outfit 2:

  • Shirt – T438109
  • Jeans – T017017B

Outfit 3:

  • Bomber jacket – T493026
  • Top – T411477C
  • Skirt – T693369

The bomber jacket is styled in two of the autumnal looks, in a toffee colour, perfect for the seasonal change. Fans instantly loved the item, with one person commenting: "LOVE the bomber."

Another shopper quickly pointed out: "Bomber jacket is sold out online," to which a customer service representative replied: "Don't worry Fiona, we're due more to arrive in Navy on Monday and Toffee is coming back August 28."

If you are desperate to get your hands on the jacket, it is available in black in sizes 6 to 24 (at time of writing). There is a zip and a relaxed fit, making it the perfect addition to an autumn wardrobe when it starts to get a little chillier.

There are even pockets for added practicality. Shoppers loved the look so much that it has previously sold out on more than one occasion.

One person reviewed the jacket, stating: "So pleased I managed to get this jacket when it was restocked. Really love the style and colour. Looks great with jeans and dresses."

A second nostalgic fan wrote: "I love jackets like this, and this one is really good, brings back memories of my teens!" While a third person called it "perfect."

They added: "It will be ideal in autumn months with a blouse underneath and when it gets chillier will be warm. Love the toffee colour proper autumn colour."

However, some shoppers were shocked by the sizing. They said it was much bigger than they expected. One M&S fan said: "Lovely bomber jacket, very oversized though so I sized down from my usual 14 to a 10 and it’s still roomy."

A second person agreed, commenting: "The fit is generous, may want to consider a size down especially if you are not very tall." The bomber jacket rivals much more expensive looks at other retailers.

What do you think of the Topshop jacket?

ASOS is currently selling a very similar jacket at a higher price. The Topshop Premium Real Leather Soft Suede Oversized Bomber Jacket has a spread collar and zip fastening, available in a rust colour.

It comes in sizes 4 to 18 and also has an oversized fit with ribbed trims. There are no reviews for the jacket and it will set you back much more than the M&S dupe at £240.

Which do you prefer? Let us know in the comments.

Frankie Bridge in West End play that 'made her scream for real' taking over from Cheryl and Lily Allen

by
Frankie Bridge in West End play that 'made her scream for real' taking over from Cheryl and Lily Allen

Frankie Bridge is starring in 2:22 A Ghost Story, and has made some new revelations about the show. She took the role over from Cheryl, who in turn succeeded Lily Allen.

The West End thriller focuses on a couple who are renovating their London house. At 2.22am, Jenny, played by Frankie, hears mysterious sounds in the house and becomes convinced it's haunted.

Her and her husband eventually invite friends over and decide to stay up until 2.22am to see what happens. Frankie herself admitted to finding the show scary.

READ MORE:How to get cheap West End theatre tickets after David Tennant said they're too expensive

She told the Mirror: "Two times in a row, I’ve genuinely screamed. Even for me, being on stage, it makes me jump. I do believe there is something out there, and I do believe in mediums. I find them really comforting.”

The play has received rave reviews, with The Guardian writing "The suspense arrives eventually and the twist at the end is so clever, even for those who know what’s coming, that it sends us reeling back to the beginning in our minds. The production ultimately succeeds not because of its ramped up comedy but in spite of it.

Frankie Bridge is the latest actress to take on 2:22 A Ghost Story

"It will surely win audiences once again: it has entertainment value, and there are intelligent discussions about gentrification which bring depth to the ghost story as well. But there is the sense here that having become such a machine, it risks losing its heart."

Tickets for 2:22 A Ghost Story are available from Theatre Tickets Direct. They're currently on offer and start at £24 for the remaining weekdays in August and September, with weekends starting at £30.

You can also see 2:22 A Ghost Story in nine other cities. You can book tickets for the UK tour on ATG.
