New Balance knocks 40% off 'most comfortable shoe to exist'

Shoppers can enjoy a substantial discount on New Balance's WRPD Runner Shoes, with one enthusiastic customer describing them as "the most comfortable shoe to exist". Normally £155, these trainers are now on sale for £93, representing a 40 per cent saving. You can also get them for £70 at JD Sports.

They come in two understated colour combinations: 'moonrock with light mushroom' and 'flat taupe with sparrow', and boast a 'uniquely conceptual design' that 'suggests a sense of fluid motion' through sculpted contours and wavy accents. The shoes feature a mesh upper made from a blend of knit, leather, and wool, along with FuelCell foam that provides a propulsive feel to help drive you forward.

Available in sizes 3.5 to 12.5, with standard width options, these unisex shoes have garnered high praise from customers. One reviewer raved: "Super comfy shoe, I am totally in love. Another fan added: "My job requires a lot of walking and standing, and I usually have cramps on my leg/feet by the end of the day. My life changed after putting these shoes on - they are so comfortable, my legs are no longer cramping after work anymore!

"I feel my feet are being hugged inside the shoes. For the people saying the shoes runs big, choose from the W size instead of the M (W is the size in women and M is the sizes in men). It is actually true to size," reports the Liverpool Echo.

However, another had a different take due to sizing issues – they said: "I like this shoe, it's comfortable and makes me like an inch taller which I always appreciate. But the sizing is off. I'm a solid 6.5 size, and I always wear 6.5's in New Balance, but I ordered 6.5 in this shoe and it was an inch too big. I'm returning for a half size smaller, but I'm a bit worried even that will be too big."

'Indecent exposure, vomiting and rape' - but new nightclub allowed to open in 'problem' London venue

'Indecent exposure, vomiting and rape' - but new nightclub allowed to open in 'problem' London venue

A new nightclub will be allowed to open at a South London venue which was shut down last year after an alleged rape inside the premises. Eddie Hanson, Deputy Mayor of Camden, had his application to open Vision Lounge on the Old Kent Road approved by Southwark councillors at a meeting on Thursday (January 30), despite opposition from local residents, the Met Police and the council's own licensing team.

Club 701, the previous venue to operate out of the building which is unrelated to Mr Hanson, was stripped of its licence by the council in February 2024 after an alleged rape there. The club was open without the correct authorisation at the time.

Residents told the licensing meeting that they had endured 10 years of disturbances from previous clubs operating out of the same premises, including crime, indecent exposure and unlicensed food vendors setting up barbecues in the street nearby to serve drunken customers.

Eddie Hanson, deputy mayor of Camden, said he had poured thousands of pounds into the planned new club

Pip Hayman, who spoke on behalf of a group of residents living near the venue, said: "When the nightclub [venue] goes into operation it really feels like residents in the area need to bolt down and prepare for an apocalypse-like environment. Drug taking has been a common problem… It's quite common at 3am in the morning for residents to be woken up by someone vomiting against their window. We've also had instances of indecent exposure."

He added: "When the nightclub operates in this area you get different food vendors turn up with barbecues and they will sit at different points around the local area serving patrons coming in and out."

Mark Lynch, from the local police's licensing team, told councillors that the venue wasn't suitable for a nightclub due to its location in a residential area and the history of antisocial behaviour and crime linked to previous clubs operating out of the building. Wesley McArthur, from the council's own licensing team, told the meeting that the venue had been 'a cause of complaint' under various licences and managers for the last 20 years.

He said: "It's a very hard property to manage. Nobody has lasted long there and every person who has taken over the premises has encountered problems or indeed caused problems."

People have previously congregated on the street at night outside the venue

Eddie Hanson said he had invested thousands of pounds into the planned club and said he had 20 years of experience in the nightlife business as a promoter, manager and door picker. He added: "We appreciate our neighbours. We want to work with our neighbours. We want to ensure our neighbours are part of our journey."

Cllr Renata Hamvas, Chair of the Licensing Committee, said that she and fellow Labour councillors Ellie Cumbo and Sunny Lambe had 'put faith' in Mr Hanson to manage the premises effectively and not cause disruption to residents. The exact conditions of the licence will be published at a later date. Mr Hanson applied for the club to be allowed to open until 5am on weekends.

Speaking after the meeting, Pip Hayman said he was disappointed with the councillors' decision. He said: "What more could be presented to a group of Southwark councillors to make them realise that this is not an appropriate licence to be granted?"

Sarah Mayhew murdered in Sutton home by 'bloodthirsty' couple with cannibal fantasies

by
Sarah Mayhew murdered in Sutton home by 'bloodthirsty' couple with cannibal fantasies

The full horror of Sarah Mayhew's murder has been laid bare at the Old Bailey this morning with her 'bloodthirsty' killers set to be jailed on Thursday afternoon (January 30). Steven Sansom, 45, from Sutton, and Gemma Watts, 49, from Croydon, both admitted murdering, butchering, and disposing of her body around South London last year.

Opening the sentencing in Court 2, with Sarah's family sat tearfully in the public gallery, prosecutor Tom Little KC said: "Both of these defendants acting together conducted a bloodthirsty murder that was planned and premeditated in advance. This murder involved sadistic conduct and sexual conduct.

"Having committed that murder there was significant evidence of efforts thwart justice in the following days. The defendants had exchanged a number of depraved messages including a desire to kill victims with a knife and knives and then have sex with each other while covered in blood. They even discussed eating human flesh, but we do not suggest they did so."

The court heard Sarah, a 38-year-old mum-of-two, met Sansom on a dating app and later introduced him to Watts, who he started seeing. Their grim texts referenced dog porn and having sex covered in blood, plus videos of Sansom beating Watts with a wooden spoon and Watts performing sexual activity with a dog.

Double Killer: Steven Sansom murdered Terry Boyle in 1998 and Sarah Mayhew in 2024

In one particularly disturbing exchange, Sansom sent a voice note saying: "Everyone looks like meat now, don't they. A play thing. Something to cut, something to bleed." Watts responded: "I wonder what they taste like, cooked flesh." Sansom then said 'people taste like pork, consistency, texture is the same'.

The couple also talked about dying together if they were ever caught, while Watts wrote a letter saying Sansom should have no liability if she was ever to die during one of their sex games. Police also retrieved videos taken by Watts that showed her attempts to secretly film a young woman under her duvet.

Mr Little said that when Sarah got in contact with Sansom asking him for money, he messaged Watts and they discussed slitting her throat over Watts' face. Then on March 1 2024, Sansom invited Sarah to his home on Burnell Road for 'a little party' with reference to being 'horny' and wanting to buy heroin.

Mr Little said Sarah was 'lured' to Sansom's home, with Watts also present, where, the prosecution say, she was attacked with at least one knife. He also said there was evidence consistent with strangulation.

Sansom and Watts then disposed of Sarah's body, first taking her arms, legs, and head to Rowdown Fields and New Addington, and then her torso to the River Wandle in Mitcham. Watts also purchased cleaning equipment, while Sansom bought an incinerator that Watts was spotted using by a neighbour to burn clothes.

Gemma Watts told officers Sarah Mayhew "deserved to die" when she was questioned at Lewisham Police Station

After police launched an investigation into the discovery of Sarah's remains by a dog walker in the fields on April 2, Sansom sent a voice note saying 'We're not evil, we're not evil. We done the world a service'. There were also messages on Sansom's phone suggesting Sarah had been killed over a drug debt.

Sansom was arrested on April 6 and denied it all, despite the mountain of evidence against him. When Watts was arrested and brought into custody, she was heard muttering 'she deserved it anyway, dirty crackhead'. Watts claimed she was suicidal and voices told her to do 'bad things' but she was not permanently sectioned.

Alexandra Healey KC, defence counsel for Sansom, said there was no mitigation other than his guilty plea, and that Sansom accepted a whole life order was appropriate due to his previous conviction for murder. Sansom slit the throat of a cab driver in Croydon on Christmas Eve 1998.

Charlotte Newell KC, Watts, said her client was not seeking to blame Sansom for her actions, but asked the judge to consider the offences 'against the background of her vulnerabilities'. Ms Newell revealed Watts had been abused as a young teenager and sought out physically and sexually abusive relationships ever since.

The defendants will be sentenced by Mrs Justice Cutts at 2:30pm.

Save £65 on 'easy to use' dual air fryer Amazon shoppers say is 'cost-effective'

by
Save £65 on 'easy to use' dual air fryer Amazon shoppers say is 'cost-effective'

If you haven't jumped on the air fryer bandwagon yet, or are looking to update your current gadget, Amazon is now offering a fabulous discount on an extra-large option. The online retailer has knocked 41% off the 9L Cookwise Dual Air Fryer that has an impressive nine cooking presets.

Originally costing £159.99, the kitchen appliance can now be yours for £94.97 (price correct at the time of writing), giving you a lovely saving of £65. Each of the air fryer’s baskets has a capacity of 4.5 litres and can be used independently or together to cook different foods to create a complete meal.

The handy sync finish function makes it possible for the two baskets to finish cooking at the same time. The air fryer is perfect for cooking different food types, as there are nine cooking presets, including fish, fries, bake, vegetables, and chicken.

The clever gadget has an intelligent shake reminder, alerting you when it's time to flip food, ensuring both sides get cooked properly. It has a sensitive LED display that is simple to operate and easy to set and control, making meal time simple.

Both baskets have a super-large visual window and a light, allowing you to monitor the status of the food inside so that you don't undercook or overcook. If you're using both baskets to cook the same food, you can press the handy match button to share the programme information after setting one basket.

Air fryers cook food in a healthier way due to them requiring little or no oil, and they also help you save money on your electricity bill. Cookwise says its appliance cooks at a faster speed that's around '30% higher than traditional ovens' and uses lower energy consumption, saving 'up to 70% on energy'.

Over 4,700 Amazon customers have reviewed the 9L Cookwise Dual Air Fryer to date, with it earning a respectable 4.6 out of five stars. One impressed buyer gave it top marks and said: "We finally bought an air fryer much to the delight of our teenage children. We are so impressed with it. It's easy to use and easy to clean. Amazing product at an amazing price for what you get."

"This is a fantastic large and powerful air fryer," wrote a second satisfied shopper. "Very convenient if you want to cook at two different temperatures… It's super stylish too when sitting on the counter top. Cooks very efficiently and cooks food really well at a fraction of a time compared to an oven."

Someone else agreed, as they explained: "Compared to the oven, it cooks faster with less oil and uses less electricity. Most importantly, the food turns out better and more evenly cooked with less effort. It is easier to clean as well. The controls are fairly intuitive and simple to follow."

Another added: "Very cost effective, simple to use and good capacity. Worth every penny. Bought as a birthday present for my student son. So pleased with it. Batch cooking is made so much easier. Cleaning is quick and easy."

Unfortunately one Amazon customer was left disappointed with the dual air fryer, as they explained: "After a couple of uses the touch buttons are very difficult to use as they don't respond to touch. It's very difficult to get the air fryer to actually turn on."

You can buy the 9L Cookwise Dual Air Fryer from Amazon here for £94.97 while the deal is live. Elsewhere, Very has knocked £50 off the Tower 10.4L Vortx Dual Basket Air Fryer, bringing the price down from £149 to £99. It has six cooking presets, however it's worth noting the baskets do not have windows, so you can't check your food without opening them.

If you fancy splurging on an air fryer, the Ninja Foodi MAX Dual Zone Air Fryer is now £199.99, down from £269.99. Similar to the Very appliance, it has six cooking presets and does not have any windows, unlike the Amazon option.

Predator who claimed 'not all paedophiles are the same' on trial after returning from Thailand

by
Predator who claimed 'not all paedophiles are the same' on trial after returning from Thailand

An on-the-run Scout leader accused of child sex offences told police he had been living in “paradise” for 27 years, after being arrested returning from Thailand, a court heard. Richard Burrows, 80, had fled the UK after being due in court in December 1997, a jury at Chester Crown Court was told.

He told his brother “not all paedophiles are the same”, as he planned his return to the UK in March last year. Burrows, originally from Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, denies four counts of buggery, two counts of indecency with a child, two counts of attempted buggery and 47 indecent assaults against 10 complainants aged between nine and 15, from the mid-1960s to the mid-1990s.

As complainants of sexual offences, none of the victims can be identified. Mark Connor, opening the case for the prosecution, told the jury of eight women and four men that, over many years, Burrows systematically abused boys with whom he came into contact.

Mr Connor said: “He obtained positions of trust and responsibility which he breached to satisfy himself sexually with the youngsters.”

Burrows had worked as a housemaster at a school in Cheshire in the 1960s, where he allegedly preyed on vulnerable youngsters. He was also involved in the Scouts as a Scout leader, and was involved in amateur radio clubs. The jury was told Burrows admits indecent assault and sexual touching of some of the boys in his care.

But he denies abusing other youngsters and any penetrative sexual activity, drawing a distinction between that and sexual touching, which he appears to suggest is justified because in his mind he did no harm, the jury was told.

He claims the complainants in this trial are either mistaken about the identity of the perpetrator or are lying. Mr Connor said Burrows was first arrested in April 1997 and his house in Birmingham was searched. A number of magazines showing adolescent and pre-pubescent boys engaged in sex were found stitched inside one of his jackets.

He was charged with child sexual offences and was due to appear at Chester Crown Court on December 8 1997. When he failed to attend, a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Burrows had fled to Thailand using the name Peter Leslie Smith, having cloned an acquaintance’s identity and obtained a passport in that name. He was arrested at Heathrow Airport when he returned to the UK on the eve of his 80th birthday last March.

“Having enjoyed 27 years in paradise, to quote his description of where he had spent his time on the run,” Mr Connor said.

Police appealed on BBC TV’s Crimewatch programme for information about Burrows, prompting more complainants to come forward.

The trial is expected to last up to five weeks.

A heavyweight music line-up of The Who, The Corrs, James Arthur, Micky Flanagan, The Sex Pistols with Frank Carter and superstar TikToker GK Barry have been announced as the headliners of a week of concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall runs from March 24 to 30. Tickets will go on sale at 9am on Friday, January 31, and are expected to sell out very quickly. Proceedings will kick off on Monday, March 24, with the “rip-roaring punk rock redux” of singer Frank Carter stepping into Jonny Rotten's shoes alongside Sex Pistols' regulars Paul Cook, Steve Jones and Glen Matlock as they tear through their seminal album ‘Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols’. Support will come from beat-punk outfit Kid Kapichi and fast-rising trio The Molotovs.

Micky Flanagan leads a night of comedy on Tuesday, March 25. A self-described “working-class boy done good”, Micky has risen to be one of the biggest names in UK comedy and a full line-up of support acts will be announced. Elsewhere, James Arthur will take to the Royal Albert Hall stage on Wednesday, March 6, in the same week that marks the release of his sixth solo album Pisces.

The Corrs will mark a nostalgic trip back to 1990s pop with their show on Friday, March 28, playing hit singles such as ‘Runaway’, ‘What Can I Do’ and ‘So Young’
The Corrs will mark a nostalgic trip back to 1990s pop with their show on Friday, March 28, playing hit singles such as ‘Runaway’, ‘What Can I Do’ and ‘So Young’

The Royal Albert Hall concert series was founded in 2000 by Roger Daltrey, lead singer of The Who. While he stepped back from figurehead duties last year, Daltrey remains an honorary patron of the charity and The Who fans will enjoy a rare chance to hear classics from ‘My Generation’ to ‘Baba O’Riley’ on Thursday, March 27, and Sunday, March 30. For these shows, The Who will welcome special guests Level 42, who formed as a jazz-funk band in 1979 and went on to have massive hits including ‘Lessons In Love’ and ‘Something About You’.

The Corrs will mark a nostalgic trip back to 1990s pop with their show on Friday, March 28, playing hit singles such as ‘Runaway’, ‘What Can I Do’ and ‘So Young’. Andrea Corr said: “We're thrilled to be performing at the Royal Albert Hall for Teenage Cancer Trust. This charity is close to our hearts because it provides essential care and support to young people facing the toughest battles of their lives.”

GK Barry Live! With very special guests will take place on Saturday, March 29. The star, fresh from winning over millions of fans on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!, becomes Teenage Cancer Trust’s latest ambassador. She is known for her humorous and relatable TikTok persona and the hit podcast Saving Grace, which she has taken to packed crowds at both Wembley Arena and the Palladium.

Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to providing specialised nursing care and support for young people with cancer. Cancer kills more teenagers and young adults in the UK than any other disease. And for those who survive, going through it without the right support can be devastating – physically and emotionally.

Every day, more than seven young people aged 13 to 24 are diagnosed with cancer. It is estimated by 2030, that number will be closer to 10. Money from the gigs at the Royal Albert Hall means Teenage Cancer Trust can fund specialist nurses and youth workers to be there for a young person when cancer has turned their world upside down.

Since 2000, over £34 million has been raised by Teenage Cancer Trust concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, and that money has helped fund specialist nurses, hospital units and support services right across the UK that help get young people through some unimaginably hard times.

Kate Collins, Chief Executive of Teenage Cancer Trust, said: “We are delighted that some of the biggest names from across the music, and entertainment industry are performing at this year's Teenage Cancer Trust gigs at the Royal Albert Hall. We couldn’t be more grateful for their commitment to raising vital funds for young people with cancer.

“These concerts, brainchild of – and driven by - the legendary Roger Daltrey since 2000, have raised a phenomenal £34 million to fund Teenage Cancer Trust’s work across the UK – making our specialist support possible across the UK so that young people with cancer get the expert, individual care and support they need at this unique and critical stage of their lives.

The shows are supported by American Airlines, Metro, Absolute Radio, S.J.M. Concerts, Twickets, and the Royal Albert Hall. Aldi, which has partnered with Teenage Cancer Trust since 2017, and raised over £11 million for the charity to date is the headline sponsor for this year’s series. BBC issues warning to Strictly's Wynne Evans after making 'inappropriate' sexual remark about Janette Manrara

BBC issues warning to Strictly's Wynne Evans after making 'inappropriate' sexual remark about Janette Manrara

Strictly star Wynne Evans has been reprimanded by the BBC after making an inappropriate comment about Janette Manrara during the Strictly Live Tour.

The 52-year-old Go Compare advert star, who is currently performing with professional dancer Katya Jones, made a crude joke about Janette during a photocall in Birmingham.

During a group photo, Evans was caught on camera making an unsuitable sexual comment to Janette as she joined the group. He sang out: "Go Compare," before adding: "Not too close to Jamie [Borthwick]."

He then used the derogatory term 'spit roast' in reference to a vulgar sexual act in a video published by Daily Mail.

Janette's reaction was unclear as her face was momentarily obscured by other Strictly stars. There was awkward laughter, with Jamie wincing as Evans appeared to chuckle at his own comment, reports the Mirror.

The 52-year-old Go Compare advert star, who is currently performing with professional dancer Katya Jones, made a crude joke about Janette during a photocall in Birmingham

Following his remark, Evans issued an apology: "My language was inappropriate and unacceptable for which I sincerely apologise."

A spokesperson for the BBC confirmed they had addressed the issue with the opera singer, stating they 'do not tolerate such behaviour'. The tour producers have also given him a warning.

A representative for the Strictly live tour and BBC Studios said: "We were not previously aware of the remark and did not receive any complaints. We have made it very clear to Wynne that we do not tolerate such behaviour on the tour."

Evans recently had to withdraw from the Glasgow leg of the Strictly tour due to an ankle injury.

He posted pictures of his bruised ankle on Instagram and shared a video update on Saturday evening, saying: "Ankle's getting a bit better, it was great to be able to sing in Glasgow tonight, even if I couldn't dance, hopefully back tomorrow. But watch this space, I'll let you know in the morning. See how the swelling goes down, and all that kind of stuff, thanks for all the lovely messages, amazing."
