Man beats 'XL Bully' over the head with shovel on Hackney estate as neighbour warns 'this is not the first time'

A masked man who battered a dog 15 times over the head with a shovel was caught on camera by a neighbour in the flats above. Harrowing footage, taken from a home on Pembury Place in Hackney, shows a man in a green tracksuit armed with a garden spade whacking a large brown XL Bully-type dog over the head before sticking the garden tool in the dirt.

The thumps could be heard across the estate and gave the dog a nose bleed. It prompted the video taker to call police who came and saved the beaten mutt, leading it out the garden and into the back of a police van. Footage taken of the rescue featured cheers from neighbours who said 'Aw he's beautiful', 'Aw he's got a bloody nose' and 'Aw look how friendly he is'.

Alongside the video on X, crime awareness channel London and UK Street News wrote: "[The person filming] raised the alarm with police and was gathering evidence. This is not the first time. Please if anyone has any information I would be grateful."

The dog was beaten in a garden at Pembury Place in Hackney

Police confirmed they were called to the area after reports of a man assaulting a dog in the rear garden of a property just before 11am on Wednesday (November 8). When they got to the address they found the dog with facial injuries and took it to an animal hospital where it remains in care in a stable condition.

A Met Police spokesperson said: "No one was present at the address but a man has [on Thursday, November 9] attended a police station and been arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty. Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting CAD 2303/8NOV."
