Fare evasion costs Transport for London whopping £130m a year

Image
Around one in 29 public transport users in London do not pay the correct fare, figures show. Transport for London (TfL) said 3.5 per cent of passengers across its network evade fares, costing it £130 million annually. The figure has fallen from 3.8% in the 2023/24 financial year. In April, TfL announced new measures aimed at slashing the figure to 1.5% by the end of the decade. These include targeting the most prolific fare evaders and using advanced technology. Shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick posted a video on social media on Thursday in which he confronted people who forced their way through the ticket barriers at Stratford station in east London. He asked one person "do you think it's all right not to pay" and challenged another to "go back through the barrier and pay". Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live on Thursday, Mr Jenrick said staff "weren't doing anything" to tackle evasion when he was at Stratford to film the video. "The...

South London primary school that was 'falling apart' set for new upgrade to complete expansion

Image
A primary school in South London is set for another upgrade to complete its major expansion. Burlington Junior School, in New Malden, won permission from Kingston Council in 2022 to rebuild its crumbling main building - described as "falling apart" by its chair of governors. The development, which was completed in April, increased the school's capacity from 480 to 600 pupils across Year 3 to 6. It involved demolishing the school's main building for a new three-storey teaching block, so that it could expand from four to five forms of entry. The new block has classrooms, group rooms and teaching spaces. It also has a sports hall, available to locals outside of school hours, along with an artificial grass pitch and games areas. Heathrow boss had phone on silent mode as fire unfolded, inquiry finds

Image
Attempts to tell Heathrow airport’s sleeping chief executive that the airport had been closed because of a power outage failed because his bedside phone was on silent, an inquiry has found. Thomas Woldbye was in bed as senior Heathrow staff decided to suspend operations because of a fire at a nearby electrical substation. No flights operated at the west London airport until about 6pm on March 21 because of the blaze which started late the previous night. More than 270,000 air passenger journeys were disrupted by the incident. Heathrow commissioned an inquiry into what happened, led by former transport secretary Ruth Kelly, who is an independent member of the airport’s board. The Kelly Review found that Mr Woldbye “was not involved” in the decision taken by the airport’s chief operating officer Javier Echave at 1.15am on March 21 to suspend operations until 11.59pm. Mr Woldbye’s mobile was “on his bedside table” but he was unaware of multiple attempts to alert him to the situation ...

North London teacher sacked after petition to remove headteacher leads to police at school gates

Image
A North London teacher has been banned from the profession after a petition to oust the headteacher led to police officers being stationed outside the school gates. Joshua Adusei, 31, who taught PE at the Harris Academy in Tottenham, encouraged Year 10 students to sign the petition which called for the headteacher to be sacked. He encouraged students in the playground to sign the petition in April 2021, after he had told the headteacher he would “get him out” if he did not resign, a Teaching Regulation Agency panel heard. The Change.org petition, which received more than 6,000 signatures before it was ended, said the headteacher had permanently excluded three black students from the school after one month in the role and had introduced “a zero tolerance behaviour policy that disproportionately affects BAME and SEN students”. His name was removed from the petition after the Metropolitan Police received reports of four death threats from the school, the Guardian reported. His name wa...

West London bridge over Thames to shut for repairs as timber panels holding it together are rotting

Image
Drivers are being urged to plan ahead and avoid Albert Bridge next week as it closes for essential maintenance. The iconic West London river crossing will be closed to vehicles in both directions from 7am, Tuesday, May 27, to 6am, Monday, June 2. A diversion will be in place for motorists via Chelsea Bridge or Battersea Bridge, though traffic is expected to be heavier than normal. Kensington and Chelsea Council , which manages the bridge, said the works are taking place during summer half term to minimise the impact on drivers. During the six-day closure council engineers are expected to repair the bridge deck, street lighting and expansion joints. These allow the bridge to expand and contract with temperature changes and adjust to the weight of vehicles and wind. Engineers will replace around 10pc of the entire decking (Image: RBKC) Kensington and Chelsea Council said works will also take place to the pavements, but this will be done in stages to allow pedestrian...

A commercial barrister by trade, Mr Dinsmore was elected as a Fulham Town councillor in 2022. During his time on the local authority he has sat on the Social Inclusion and Community Safety Policy and Accountability Committee and served as the Opposition Deputy Leader. London's long lost ancient river older than the city itself that you can still spot signs of

Image
Beneath the bustling streets of the City of London once flowed a river called the Walbrook. It’s now buried about 30 feet below ground level, and it’s part of a network of ‘lost rivers’ that defined Roman London. The Walbrook used to separate two hills - Cornhill and Ludgate - which helped shape how the Romans built the city. It provided a vital source of freshwater and powered industries such as tanning, glassmaking and pottery production. But by the second century, the river began silting up, and was slowly covered over as the city grew. But even though it’s hidden today, signs of it still exist in street names, buildings, and ruins. READ MORE: London's oldest church with 1,300-year-old archway where headless Tower of London victims were buried The riverside walk runs along Walbrook Wharf and is closed to pedestrians when waste is being transferred onto barges. The North Building will contain Blocks A and B, and will be 29 and 23 storeys in height and is where the co-living space will be located. Crumbling South London hospital 'not fit for purpose' and puts patients at risk says ex estates manager

Image
St Helier Hospital's crumbling infrastructure is placing patient safety in jeopardy, according to its former estates manager. These concerns follow the government's decision to push vital redevelopment back to the 2030s following a review of the New Hospitals Programme. Despite being older than the NHS itself, years of underinvestment have seen the Sutton hospital deteriorate. Leaking ceilings, broken lifts, sinking floors and corridor care have all become normal for all visitors to St Helier. Now, former staff, patients and the local MP Bobby Dean fear that the hospital itself could soon pose a health risk. "I've seen a lot in 30 years working in the NHS, but the condition of the buildings at St Helier is among the worst," said Ken Welch, the hospital's former Director of Facilities, Estates and Supplies. "I'm seriously concerned about the risk of fire, particularly with the growing use of corridor care. But most of all, I'm worried abo...
