BBC Radio 2's Steve Wright's son breaks silence after broadcaster's death at 69

by
BBC Radio 2's Steve Wright's son breaks silence after broadcaster's death at 69

Steve Wright's son Tom has spoken out with a moving message after his dad passed away at 69 on Monday. BBC Radio 2 DJ 'Wrighty', who was famous for his radio show 'Steve Wright In The Afternoon', died earlier this week prompting a flood of tributes to the much loved presenter who called himself 'DJ Silly Boy'.

On Monday morning, police and emergency first responders went to a flat in Marylebone, Central London. A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: "A man in his 60s was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed."

They continued: "The death was unexpected, but is not being treated as suspicious. A report will be prepared for the coroner." A few days after Steve died, his son Tom, who had come from Los Angeles to the UK to take care of him before he passed away, issued a moving tribute to him online, reports The Mirror.

He wrote: "God rest your soul Dad, and thank you all for all the kind words from all the lives he touched and people that loved him; It's gonna be an intense few days, so catching up and hearing from old friends and new would mean more than anything else right now too..."

Tom also said: "Rough as it may be, I thank the Gods I'm sober, as this would have straight up killed me even a couple of years ago after losing Mum over the pandemic in the same way without. Still, I will cherish every moment we shared and every memory we made, and it's not like I don't have a few shows to be working through whenever I miss his voice, though tears me up too much now to consider...

"But it means the world hearing from so many beloved friends of his and mine and I only hope to make him proud; and build on his legacy with kindness and love anyways I can! Love you all and miss you already Dad. Getting to see him before he #ConnectionAsCure passed after flying back to take care of the old Blighter."

Earlier this week, London Ambulance Service confirmed they were called to Steve's address following 'reports of an incident'. Despite their best efforts, Wright was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The BBC star was last on air on Sunday, February 11 presenting a pre-recorded special Valentine's Day edition of his Love Songs programme on Radio 2.

Tom's mum Cyndi died in July 2020 aged 65 at her home in West Sussex. A coroner ruled her death as non-suspicious. However, there wasn't enough evidence to establish the cause. Steve and Cyndi tied the knot in 1985 after he proposed on air but they went their separate ways in 1999.

London weather forecast hour by hour and when heavy rain will fall amid 27-hour Met Office warning

by
London weather forecast hour by hour and when heavy rain will fall amid 27-hour Met Office warning

London is set for a very wet evening but will avoid the worst of the daytime downpours on Saturday as a Met Office yellow warning comes into effect. Warnings over flooding have been issued across Britain as heavy downpours are set to lash the country with a 27-hour Met Office alert for rain in place.

All of England and Wales is covered by yellow Met Office rain alerts lasting from Saturday afternoon to Sunday evening, though Northern Ireland and Scotland will also be damp. In London the daytime is actually looking relatively dry throughout with overcast conditions from midday to 7pm with a 10% chance of rain.

That gives way to light rain at about 8pm with a 60% chance of downpours. The temperature will remain constant at 12C according to the Met Office until it drops to 11C at 2am on Sunday. The light downpours turn to heavy rain from 9pm in London with an 80% chance of rain before increasing to 90% at 10pm.

Heavy rain continues until 3am when it eases off slightly to light downpours, but ramps up again at 4am then easing off again an hour later. The rain is forecast to stop completely by 8am but expect some very muddy fields and parks for dog walking and running across London on Sunday morning.

They warn of possible flooding, travel disruption and power cuts, with as much as 40mm of rain set to fall on already saturated ground after downpours earlier in the week. However, temperatures will hit highs of 14 to 15C, five degrees higher than average for the time of year, amid a mild spell in the country due to winds coming from the south.

Met Office forecaster Craig Snell said: "The ground is already a little bit more saturated across England and Wales compared to Scotland and Northern Ireland, so they'll be a little more sensitive to the rainfall. Some parts could see disruption, transport may be a little bit delayed and if you're driving on the roads your journey may take a little bit longer due to spray and road closures."

The Environment Agency has issued eight flood warnings in England, meaning flooding is expected, however none are currently in place for London.

Major GMB shake-up as much-loved presenter switches to This Morning

Major GMB shake-up as much-loved presenter switches to This Morning

Ben Shephard is saying goodbye to Good Morning Britain (GMB) to join the This Morning team. Shephard will become a permanent presenter alongside Cat Deeley.

The 49-year-old, who is stepping into the daytime programme following the departure of Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, has spent more than a decade at the breakfast ITV show. Shephard had occasionally stepped in as a replacement for Schofield on This Morning before joining GMB at its launch in 2014 along with former BBC Breakfast presenter Susanna Reid and ex-Sky News presenter Charlotte Hawkins.

Posting on Instagram, he said: “Ten years has flown by at GMB. I’ve loved every minute, (well not those minutes immediately after the alarm goes off at 3.30am) but all the others have been incredible. As have these amazing women I’ve been lucky enough to sit alongside, work with, laugh with and on the odd occasions drink with!

“I will miss working with them and the whole team – and I’m very grateful that they are just next door so that whenever I get nostalgic I know they aren’t too far away.” The former GMTV presenter, who has hosted the ITV shows Tipping Point and Ninja Warrior UK, also shared an image of him with Reid, Hawkins, Kate Garraway and Ranvir Singh.

He returned to This Morning over the last year for a stint to work with Willoughby, who left the sofa in October. During his time on GMB, Shephard has apologised for Dame Helen Mirren and former What Not To Wear host Susannah Constantine saying bad language on-air, in separate incidents, and covered the coronation of the King.

He has also experienced a millipede urinating on him, prompting the presenter to ask for sanitiser, and comedian and actress Daisy May Cooper saying she was left “shaking” after finally meeting her crush, Shephard.

West London council warns of £19 million budget blackhole next year and worse in years to come

by
West London council warns of £19 million budget blackhole next year and worse in years to come

A West London council has warned of almost £19 million blackhole in its budget next year if the government freezes funding and axes an adult social care topper, a council report has revealed. Kensington and Chelsea Council said the budget deficit could grow to £32 million by 2027/28 if the Treasury does not align council funding with the forecast rate of inflation or continue provide additional adult social care grants.

If both measures are met then the deficit is expected to hit £9.4 million in 2025/26 and £21.2 million by 2028. It comes as an updated budget report shows the council broke even in the latest financial year. It predicts the council's finances would be “adversely impact[ed]” if cost pressures associated with housing people in temporary accommodation and other services continue to rise and if inflation and interest rates fall slower than expected, and if savings targets aren’t met, the report revealed.

The document read: “Whilst the additional funding announced in the provisional settlement for 2024/25 was welcome, the outlook from 2025/26 onwards is even more challenging with the Council’s planning assumption resulting in a budget gap of around £19 million in 2025/26 and then between £6 million and £7 million in each of the subsequent two years. This therefore will result in a cumulative gap of £32 million by 2027/28.

London Cllr Johnny Thalassites standing outside
Kensington and Chelsea councillor Johnny Thalassites announced a rise in council tax

“The reason for the large movement in the budget position for 2025/26 is partly driven by the additional social care grants confirmed for 2023/24 and 2024/25 expected to drop out from 2025/26 as well as the Council’s Settlement Funding Assessment (SFA) expected to be frozen in cash terms following the OBR’s (Office for Budget Responsibility) analysis of the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement.” The council has announced a raft of savings measures which could add £12.6 million to its bottom line.

It also announced a 4.99 per cent increase in council tax, which will see Band D households hit in the pocket with an extra £49.32 a year bringing their total to £1,037.58. It is expected to rise further when City Hall finalises its precept, which is currently tipped to rise by 8.6 per cent - or £37.26 for Band D homes.

The council will also start charging a premium on homes that have been empty for more than one year. It said it is working on ways to lower future deficits. Councillor Johnny Thalassites, who oversees the budget, told colleagues during a meeting on Wednesday (Friday 7) that uncertainty around government grants made it difficult for long-term planning.

He said: “How society treats its most vulnerable is always the mark of its humanity. This is a competent and a caring council, and so not only am I proud to be pressing ahead with plans to deliver older care housing at Lots Road…[but] we have put £10m in funding in the capital pipeline despite all of the pressures.”

He also announced a £100 one-off cost-of-living payment for residents across the borough. The single instalment is due in May and is expected to reach 16,500 households.

Meanwhile, the council also announced plans to increase social rents by 7.7 per cent - or an extra £43.12 per month - from April. Announcing the increase to colleagues on Wednesday, housing lead Sof McVeigh said: “This has been a very difficult decision to make, and not one we make lightly.

"We understand all the cost pressures everyone is under… and so we’ve thought long and hard about all the options for this”. She paired the announcement with a £200k increase in support funding for tenants and added the number of people seeking temporary accommodation has also increased slightly because of people leaving the private rental sector and being put into hotels.

She said: “We’re making sure we’ve got eyes wide open about this.” The budget will head to a session of Full Council for approval.
