Met Office forecasts heavy snow in parts of London tomorrow with dangerous weather warning

    by
Met Office forecasts heavy snow in parts of London tomorrow with dangerous weather warning

Heavy snowfall is predicted for some Southern parts of London as early as tomorrow morning (Monday, January 8). It sounds like you won't need to go to Hyde Park for it to be a Winter wonderland anymore.

According to Met Office and BBC Weather forecasts, large swathes of South London will be hit by snow on Monday. The Met Office has also put out a yellow warning for London to keep alert for dangerous ice patches.

Across the board, the most common time to see snowfall tomorrow is set to be around 10am and 11am. However, in some areas like Sanderstead and Kenley, snowfall is due to fall constantly all day from 9am until 7pm.

READ MORE: London weather map latest as experts warn of 3 days of snow amid big freeze

From their predictions, it seems the snow will roughly hit the South of London the heaviest, spreading as far North as the A205, so reaching areas like Dulwich and Eltham, but getting lighter further North. The snow will spread East too but will not go much further North than the Thames, staying firmly in the South East almost like being cut off by the river. The Met Office predict the snowfall will go as far West as Morden and Sutton too which will see light snowfall.

    Heaviest hit areas

A WXCharts weather map shows in purple that the South East of the capital will be hit by snow tomorrow in the middle of the day
WXCharts shows in purple that the South East of the capital will be hit by snow tomorrow in the middle of the day

South Croydon is due to have the most snow in the capital tomorrow, particularly in areas like Kenley and Sanderstead. The Met Office predict that from 9am until 7pm there will be a steady fall of snow in Sanderstead with temperatures between 1 and zero degrees all day feeling more like a freezing -5 or -6 degrees. BBC say Sanderstead's snowfall may start slightly later at 11am, but still finish at 9pm and they predict slightly warmer temperatures with interspersed sunny spells.

In Kenley, the snowfall will be less constant but heavier at 11am and 12pm say the Met Office, though the BBC predict there will be rain mixed with the snow at these times however.

But a good question to ask is will it stay around? Well, forecasters at AccuWeather don't seem to think so and predict a 69% chance there will be "little to no accumulation" of the white stuff after it stops. They say there will be about 0.1cm of it falling per hour in the capital.

    Moderate areas of snowfall

People sledging down big hill in snow filled park.
As you go slightly further from South Croydon, the snow becomes a bit less heavy

There is due to be moderate snowfall as far east as Erith, the Met Office and BBC Weather have reported. They both say the area can expect snowfall between 10am and 11am tomorrow. The BBC says that then between 6pm and 8pm snow showers will return, though the Met Office believe it will be slightly earlier and shorter-lived, returning at 5pm.

There is not much snow in the East of London North of the Thames, however, places right near the river may see some smatterings.

Slightly further back West in the rest of Bexley, they will see the heavy side of moderate snowfall with almost constant snow between 10am and 4pm, The Met Office said. BBC say that there will be snow interspersed with showers most of the day starting at 10am until 12pm and then resuming from 4pm until 9pm. Interestingly, AccuWeather does not forecast nearly as much snow in the Bexley area, only predicting a light 0.1cm flurry in the evening.

Back further South in Addington and Bromley, the Met Office says these two areas will also see moderate snowfall at similar times - roughly the late morning and then again after a hiatus in the late afternoon or early evening. The BBC are more optimistic (depending on how you look at it) however, saying that Bromley and Addington could see near-constant snow from 11am until 9pm. This does make sense with other forecast as the South is predicted to be the heaviest hit.

Again, however, AccuWeather plays this down as just a couple of evening flurries.

    Light smatterings of snowfall

Heavy snowfall on a west London residential street, view down the road with snow tracks parked cars and houses.
On the Western and Eastern borders of the snowfall between the Sutton and the East of the River Thames the snowfall becomes a little lighter

To start on the Western most snowy area tomorrow, Sutton and Morden will see a few flakes fall on Monday. Both will see snow at 11am and 2pm, with Sutton seeing an extra snowy shower at 12pm too, the Met Office said. However, the BBC predict a lot more snowfall in these areas, particularly in the evening when they have forecast constant snowfall in Sutton between 4pm and 9pm. In Morden, the BBC do not show too much difference to the Met Office predictions.

Further East on the snow's right flank, if you will, Woolwich will also see some light snowfall, the Met Office said, at 10am to 11am and then again at 5pm, with rain showers. In Eltham, they say there will be a block of snow for three hours between 10am and 12pm. Again the BBC predict a later, more intense bout of snowfall with a large block hitting Woolwich between 4pm and 9pm. They also say that Eltham will experience a steady flow of snow throughout the day on and off between 11am and 9pm.

    Yellow ice warning

The Met Office has provided advice to stay safe during this period of harsh weather which they said could see heavy snow bringing up to 1-3cm of the white stuff. A spokesperson said: " Keep yourself and your family safe when it is icy, or small amounts of snow have fallen. Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal.

"Not needing to rush, reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls. If you need to make a journey on foot, try to use pavements alongside main roads which are likely to be less slippery. Similarly, if cycling, try to stick to main roads, which are more likely to have been treated. Be prepared for weather warnings to change; the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area."

Woman canoes across Hackney Wick car park after sudden flooding leaves homes and shops under water

Woman canoes across Hackney Wick car park after sudden flooding leaves homes and shops under water

A Hackney woman was forced to canoe across a car park outside her flat after floods hit East London. Original artwork and thousands of pounds of books were reportedly damaged by the flood, said to have been caused by the banks of a nearby canal bursting after a night of heavy rain.

One resident described wading through water to rescue her pets and said she will have to replace “everything” on the ground floor. At 10.16pm on Thursday (January 4), 10 fire engines and around 70 firefighters were called to flooding over a 10-acre area in Hackney Wick, particularly affecting Dace Road and Wick Lane, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) said.

Crews were on the scene until around 4.30am and LFB officers led to safety around 50 people, some of whom stayed in a nearby art gallery. A further 100 people were affected by the incident and the water reached 50cm deep at its peak, a senior firefighter said.

The woman canoed across the flooded car park as the water reached 50cm high at its peak

Rosie Lawrence, 26, has two cats and a dog and waded across Dace Road to rescue them as water poured into her ground floor flat “like a river”. The mental health charity worker said she thinks her fridge, oven, dishwasher, washing machine, sofas, rugs and any other items on the ground floor will be damaged beyond repair.

She shared footage of her friend canoeing across the car park by the flats in the dark, wearing a long-sleeved shirt and shorts. She said she walked through the cordon put up by emergency services, adding: “I was across the road and flatmates and my pets were in (the flat). They had taped it off but I came through to get to them and I was wading through water up to short-person waist height.

“Then it all just happened really quickly. It started to go into all the units and it was filling in. It was like a river down the corridor. I tried to get sandbags. Nobody would give us any. I asked the firemen and they said, ‘We don’t do that, you need to ask the local council’. I called Tower Hamlets Council and they said, ‘Because you’re a private property we can’t supply you any sandbags’.

“So we literally just had to try and get all of our valuable goods off the floor, pets upstairs. We’re fortunate that we have a mezzanine level but not all of the units do.” Ms Lawrence said there are two bedrooms on the ground floor and two on the mezzanine level in the five-person flat.

Her property is part of a multi-unit converted warehouse complex, formally a peanut factory, with more than a dozen flats “flooded”. Simon Goode, 40, from Leyton said inches of water flooded into his bookshop and print studio in Dace Road on Thursday night, in a building also used by artists.

'Our rare and expensive equipment has been badly damaged'

A friend alerted him to the flood and on arriving at the London Centre for Book Arts he discovered he could not enter because the water outside was “about 10 inches” high by 11pm. He feared more water would pour into the building if he opened the front door; by 1am the water had not gone down and he left. When he returned on Friday morning, he discovered “at least half” of his 2,000 square foot studio had been flooded, including the professional artists’ workspaces, he said.

Speaking from the shop, where many of the books were visibly wet and warped, he said: “When we were finally able to enter the studio and assess the flooding and the damage, it’s been quite bad. There’s been at least a few inches of water all across the studio.

“A significant amount of our books and our paper stores and our equipment has all been pretty badly damaged. We teach classes. We’ve got really rare and expensive equipment. It’s going to be thousands and thousands of pounds. If you think a shelf of books is £300 or £400, it’s not really ideal.

“I don’t know how many buckets of water they’ve poured out. They’re still going. All the studios are flooded. All morning we’ve been doing buckets of water. There are painters and sculptors and one of the painters, a lot of her work has been damaged. I dread to think (about) the damage.

“Definitely I think a lot of paintings and sculptures have been damaged in the building. They’re kind of damaged beyond repair from what I can see.”

Photographer Dai Sasaki has had a studio in Dace Road for 11 years and lives above itWater marks several inches high have stained the walls and plants and litter have been spread throughout the building, which he said has never flooded before.

The 47-year-old said: “Water was coming through the door at I think 12 o’clock (at night). You’ll have to redo the flooring and there was some damage to the walls. Mainly it’s a lot of damage to the electricity but I need to ask the electrician. We are very worried about the electricity.

“After 3am automatically it (the flood) was gone. It might happen again. Nowadays it’s rainy quite a lot. It was easy for it to go that far up the wall.

“The other studio is quite wet and very bad conditions. My one is sometimes very empty and there was not much furniture so I was a bit lucky."

'Significant amounts of water that came up and over the canal'

Speaking from the scene, LFB group commander Stewart Gordon said the water was still rising to its 50cm peak when firefighters arrived. He said: “Being out of the street in those kids of conditions is very difficult. You can’t see what’s underneath it.

“We had significant rainfall in the area and obviously that led to the water levels across London rising, and the canal being where it is there, that meant that there was a significant amount of water that came up and over the canal and into the local area. Most of the properties we found were safe and secure and we don’t believe there will be any additional weak spots caused by this flooding.

“As far as we’re concerned there was no significant damage, no structural damage, that we needed to worry about.” Mr Gordon said drainage systems coped well with the overflow but damp and mould could be an ongoing issue.

Kate Garraway's husband Derek Draper dies aged 56

Kate Garraway's husband Derek Draper has tragically died following a nearly four-year battle with Covid today (Friday, January 5).

Derek, 56, was recently left fighting for his life in hospital following a heart attack. Heartbroken Kate confirmed he had passed away surrounded by loved ones.

Taking to Instagram on this morning, Kate wrote: "I’m sad to have to tell you all that my darling husband Derek has passed away. As some of you may know he has been critically ill following a cardiac arrest in early December which, because of the damage inflicted by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications.

"Derek was surrounded by his family in his final days and I was by his side holding his hand throughout the last long hours and when he passed. I have so much more to say, and of course I will do so in due course, but for now I just want to thank all the medical teams who fought so hard to save him and to make his final moments as comfortable and dignified as possible."

She added: "Sending so much love and thanks to all of you who have so generously given our family so much support. Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life."

Aristocrat's lover accused of killing their newborn baby refuses to appear in court because his back hurts

    by
Aristocrat's lover accused of killing their newborn baby refuses to appear in court because his back hurts

An aristocrat's lover accused of killing their newborn baby has refused to appear in court. Mark Gordon, 49, who was due to appear to face a charge of failing to comply with notification requirements of the sex offenders' register, claimed to be suffering extreme back and neck pain on Wednesday, January 4.

Gordon, who had appealed to have a previous hearing adjourned in order to be legally represented in court, was said to have complained of back and neck pain and requested to see a doctor. District Judge Vanessa Lloyd said she believed Gordon was using his pain as a ‘mechanism’ not to delay the hearing of his case.

Judge Lloyd said: “He refused [to attend court] last week. He will keep refusing because they can’t compel him to come... He’s using this as a mechanism… We are not going to see him today... I have a message from the prison that says he’s refusing because he’s in too much pain... We will have to adjourn again.”

Liridon Saliuka was on remand in Belmarsh when he died
Mark Gordon is being held at HMP Belmarsh in Woolwich

The Judge said Gordon was waiting to be seen by a doctor for his ‘extreme’ back and neck pain. Police Constable Rhianne Trill, the Met Police’s officer in the case, told Bromley Magistrates’ Court officers were ‘turned away’ despite possessing a warrant to produce Gordon in court.

She added that the Met wanted the charge dealt with before January 22, when Gordon’s trial alongside aristocrat partner Constance Marten, 37, is due to begin at the Old Bailey. PC Trill said: “[Gordon’s] trial starts on January 22... We are very keen for this to be over, so the sooner the better.”

Asked by PC Trill about what would happen should Gordon continue to refuse to attend court, DJ Lloyd replied that it was up to prison officers at HMP Belmarsh whether to use ‘reasonable force’ to make him attend.

“All we can do is keep trying,” she told PC Trill. “They did have a warrant, they did send a van… He won’t go to a video hearing, either... It’s a matter for the prison to decide whether to use reasonable force - but I can’t order them to use anything more than that, and they won’t, because they’re putting their staff at risk... Let’s try again in a week’s time. It will be a further remand into custody, remanded in absence."

DJ Lloyd adjourned the hearing until Wednesday, January 10. Gordon is due to appear for trial later this month alongside aristocrat partner Ms Marten after their newborn baby was discovered dead in an allotment shed in Brighton, East Sussex, in March last year.

A countrywide search was launched for the couple and their young baby after they disappeared in February. Ms Marten became estranged from her Dorset-based family in response to her beginning a relationship with Gordon in 2016, whilst she was a drama student.

The pair both deny charges of manslaughter by gross negligence of their daughter, perverting the course of justice by concealing her body, concealing the birth of the child, child cruelty and allowing the death of the child.

Latest London weather forecast as Met Office warns of 9 hours of rain in a row

Latest London weather forecast as Met Office warns of 9 hours of rain in a row

A new yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met Office as nine hours of rain in a row is forecast for London from 4pm on Thursday (January 4) through to gone midnight on Friday (January 5). The warning covering London claims that another spell of rain is due to fall which could lead to further flooding and travel disruption.

This new weather warning is in place from 12pm on Thursday to 3am on Friday (January 5). According to the Met Office: "A spell of rain is expected to move northeast across southern and eastern parts of England on Thursday, clearing during Thursday night.

"The track of the heaviest rainfall remains very uncertain, but there is a chance of 20-30 mm falling in 6-9 hours across a portion of the warning area, with a few places perhaps seeing 40-50 mm." Because of the previous severe weather in the region it is more likely this rain will cause a larger impact.

Properties could be at risk of flooding and their is a high chance there will be continued delays and cancellations to transport. You are advice to plan your journey in advance and allow for extra time.

The warning is in place for the whole of Greater London. It comes after Storm Henk caused chaos across the city yesterday, tearing down scaffolding and disrupting journeys.

Trains across London remain disrupted due to ongoing flooding from Storm Henk today. Southern, Gatwick Express, Great Northern, Greater Anglia and Thameslink routes are all affected.

In Orpington, a tree fell on a woman as a result of the 51mph gusts of wind. A flood warning is in place across North and East London today, the area with the most flood warnings.

Boots knocks £160 off Oral-B Toothbrush cheaper than Amazon and Argos that makes teeth feel 'great'

    by
Boots knocks £160 off Oral-B Toothbrush cheaper than Amazon and Argos that makes teeth feel 'great'

Boots has knocked £160 off an Oral-B iO4 toothbrush in their January sales, as the whole range of electric toothbrushes are cut across the board. The model - which is highly reviewed on all sites its sold on - currently sits at £80 from its original £240 on Boots.

This is cheaper than Amazon (£89.99), who also sell it with four replacement heads and a travel case, and Argos (£180). Electric toothbrushes are proven to give a better clean than manual as they decrease gum disease and remove more plaque.

They are also good for people with decreased mobility, like those with Parkinson's or arthritis. The iO4 comes with an app to track and improve your brushing habits, with performance reports and goals.

READ MORE: Boots' 'brilliant' skincare and makeup gift box worth over £340 now £68 in January Sales

It also has three sensors to make sure you're brushing correctly, with a signal going off for Too Hard, Too Soft and Just Right. There are also four modes including Daily Clean, Sensitive, Super-Sensitive and Whitening. Like most electric toothbrushes, it also boasts a two minute timer.

The Oral B electric toothbrush iO4 in black, pink and blue
Oral-B electric toothbrushes are cut price across the board

The iO4 electric toothbrush sits at a 4.6 from 1397 reviews on Boots, 4.3 from 376 reviews on Amazon and 4.7 from 1170 reviews on Argos. One person said: "A very good toothbrush that brings to life the tech side of brushing! Whilst it comes with the expected toothbrush & head, you get a nice travel case for both of those as well.

"Very pleased with the performance itself, definitely leaves my teeth feeling good (and looking good!) whilst having a long charge time, and to my surprise it’s Bluetooth and comes with an app which lets you track how well you brush! Very advanced tech which was unexpected but provides great insights to a daily routine. Overall, love the toothbrush and the extras that come with."

Another added: "Brought for my son as a Christmas gift, he loves it, says it’s the best clean he’s had." A third remarked: "Its very good and my teeth are much heather + if you use the wright toothpaste but this oral B iO is just a bonus."

However, a less pleased person wrote: "I was so pleased with this brush at first. My teeth had never felt so clean and it was very quiet. The problem was that it didn’t hold its charge. After being on charge for 24 hours it would cut out without warning after just being used twice I.e. 4 minutes. I took it back to the shop and they were not at all surprised and gave me my money back!" Another added: "The toothbrush is great. I bought this one for my daughter as I like mine. HOWEVER, if your bathroom doesn't have a shaver outlet you'll need to buy an adapter plug to use in another room. Why on earth does Boots not signpost this and stock adapters next to the toothbrush?? Lazy"

You can pick up a toothbrush charger adapter from Amazon. The retailer has cut prices on a range of their Oral-B products for the sales, including one you can't find on Boots: the Oral-B Smart 7. One of the best reviewed toothbrushes, it is down to £69.99 from the original £94.94.

This one comes with out some of the bells and whistles: the pressure sensor is only for if you're pressing too hard, and there's no app compatibility. However, it has five brushing modes: daily clean, pro clean, sensitive, whitening and gum care. It sits at a 4.6 out of 9,362 reviews.

The Oral-B iO9, meanwhile, is cheaper at Boots than Amazon, coming in at £225 compared to their £235, which is a £275 discount. This model uses AI to track where you brush your teeth to make sure you cover your whole mouth. It also has seven cleaning modes, the highest out of all three models. The brush sits at a 3.3 from two ratings on Amazon and a 3.8 from 63 reviews on Boots.

You can get the Oral-B iO4 at Boots (£80), Amazon (£89.99) and Argos (£180).
