Full list of XL Bully laws coming into force explained from muzzles to neutering and what happens if you abandon your dog

by
Full list of XL Bully laws coming into force explained from muzzles to neutering and what happens if you abandon your dog

A new list of XL Bully laws will come into place in 2024. Owners could face prosecution if they don't follow the new strict regulations on owning the breed, from wearing muzzles in public to when to get the dog neutered.

From today (December 31) it will be illegal to abandon an XL Bully or allow dogs to stray. It will also be illegal to rehome, sell or transfer ownership of XL Bully dogs. If you do not wish to keep your dog, vets may be asked to euthanise the XL Bully dog and the owner can claim £200 per dog.

Rescue and rehoming organisations can claim £100. The euthanasia must be performed by 31 January 2024. Owners must apply for compensation by 15 March 2024.

A shot of an XL Bully
The XL Bully must be neutered as part of the new rules

From today, it will be a criminal offence to breed XL Bully dogs but it will not be an offence to allow a litter of puppies that have already been conceived to be born.

To own an XL Bully legally, you must apply for the Certificate of Exemption by January 31 next year. You have to pay £92.40 fee for each dog you want to keep.

An owner must also be over 16 and have third party public liability insurance against your dog injuring other people. MyLondon has compiled a list of what you need to know following the upcoming ban.

The official government website states: "From 31 December 2023 XL Bully dogs must wear a muzzle and be kept on a lead when in a public place.

"You should start to train your dog to wear a muzzle when in public and to walk on a lead before 31 December 2023. Animal welfare organisations have developed helpful resources and free online learning to support owners to muzzle train their dogs."

You must also arrange to have your XL Bully neutered to help prevent breeding. The website states: "You must arrange to have your XL Bully dog neutered through castration in the case of a male dog, or through spaying in the case of a female dog. If your dog is:

  • less than 1 year old on 31 January 2024, it must be neutered by 31 December 2024
  • older than 1 year old on 31 January 2024, it must be neutered by 30 June 2024

"Defra recommend having your dog neutered as soon as possible so that you meet these deadlines."

Dogs eight weeks or older must be microchipped and registered on a dog database.

In order to get a Certificate of Exemption which is required by January 31 2024 you must follow these steps:

  1. Get third party public liability insurance cover for your dog.

  2. Neuter your dog permanently if it is not already neutered. Read Neutering an XL Bully for when you must have your dog neutered. A vet must confirm if your dog is already neutered.

  3. Pay the £92.40 fee for each dog you want to keep. The fee is not refundable.

  4. Apply for a Certificate of Exemption to keep an XL Bully dog.

For more information on the new laws coming in place, you can head to the official government website here.

They posted a series of black and white snaps of their baby as well as photos of the new parents embracing her. Shana also shared a photo of herself with her baby and Nick just moments after giving birth.

Hackney mum, 41, accused of stabbing four-year-old son to death sobs as court hears how he was found with slashed neck in his co...

A mother accused of killing her four-year-old son in a knife attack broke down in tears during her first appearance at the Old Bailey. Keziah Macharia, 41, was charged with the murder Kobi Macharia Dooly after he was found with multiple cuts in his cot December 20, only a few days before Christmas.

On Thursday, friends and family of the boy attended court for a preliminary hearing with Macharia appearing by video link from Bronzefield prison. During the hearing, Judge Lynn Tayton set a timetable for the case with a plea and trial preparation hearing on March 21. A trial before a High Court judge was provisionally scheduled to go on for up to 10 days from next November 4.

Macharia, dressed in a grey sweatshirt, had spoken only to confirm her name and date of birth then sobbed throughout the rest of the hearing as prosecutor Louise Oakley outlined details of the case.

On the evening of December 20, police had been alerted to concerns for Kobi’s welfare by his father, Ben Dooly, who had split up with the defendant about a year before. Within minutes of the 999 call, officers forced their way into the defendant’s home in Hackney, East London, at 10.59pm.

They found Kobi lying in his cot with a number of sharp force injuries. He was taken to the Royal London Hospital where he died at 16 minutes past midnight on December 21. Macharia was arrested at the address in Montague Road and charged with murder on December 22.

While a cause of death has yet to be confirmed, it is believed Kobi died from sharp force injuries, including one to the front of the neck and another to the upper left chest. At the conclusion of the short hearing, Judge Tayton remanded Macharia into custody.

Previously, Kobi’s father Mr Dooly had released a statement saying: “With heavy hearts we bid farewell to Kobi, you will be so dearly missed. The joy and laughter you brought to the world has been taken far too soon. We will be thinking of you day and night for eternity until we meet you again. The family would like to acknowledge and appreciate all messages of support. Please respect our family privacy at this very difficult time.”
