'I bought a handheld hoover on Amazon to see if I could keep on top of my cleaning and it works'

by
'I bought a handheld hoover on Amazon to see if I could keep on top of my cleaning and it works'

As I steadily approach my 30th turn around the sun, I have slowly come to the realisation that my brain just does not work for some things. Bills, talking on the phone, dealing with our landlord, occasionally using my toolbox - all things I do for our household. But getting the hoover out and cleaning? You might as well ask me to split an atom.

We have a huge Henry the Hoover, a powerful vacuum cleaner with benefits like "being able to suck up crumbs" and "having an infinite bag". What lets it down is it screams so loud my cat cowers in the furthest corner of the flat when it gets taken out and weighs as much as my conscience when my cat runs away scared.

So I needed a solution. My friend told me she got much better at cleaning when the hoover was much easier to use, stating that mine is "too much effort". Amazon provided, spitting up the VacLife handheld vacuum cleaner for a respectable £49.99 - down from £62.50. It comes in five colours, allegedly, but this changes the buttons and the shade of the plastic only. I went for the orange.

Getting next day delivery on Amazon Prime (well, I did pick same-day, but it was a Sunday and thus did not work out the way I wanted), my salvation arrived. The cleaner is super-easy to assemble, coming in about three parts at most. It also has a spare filter, which is even easier.

I live with two other boys and a cat, so mess accumulates the moment you turn around. That's why something like this was necessary. My first challenge: Theo, my cat, hit the ball with all his biscuits in it like he was batting in the World Series, leaving a trail of destruction from the kitchen directly into my bedroom.

The cleaner comes in five different colours - that is to say, slightly different shades

Starting in my room, cleaner in hand, I bent over to the mess and launched it. The noise? Not unreasonable. On the scale of mum-hoovering-while-I'm-watching-TV scale of annoyance - from "I'm watching white noise" to "I'm watching Breaking Bad" - I'd say it's on about "I'm watching Friends". That is to say, slightly disruptive.

The cat still doesn't like it that much, but he didn't run away. Instead, he sat on my bed and glared as I sucked up the mess he created with his own paw. The floor was pretty clean afterwards and inspecting the container, it managed to get a fair bit of debris and biscuits - as well as hair. It gets an A on carpeted surfaces.

Next I turned to the hard surfaces. With a sweep, the bigger objects sucked up easily. However, getting into the corners and crevices took a few goes before it was at a reasonable level. I also tried it on my kitchen counter - good for crumbs, but doesn't replace a good old fashioned spray and hand sweep. C+ for hard surfaces.

Finally, my next challenge: the sofas. All three of us are crumby boys and so I was hoping this would be our salvation. The problem with our Henry Hoover is it sucks so hard the cushions end up getting clogged into it. This problem was non-existent with the VacLife - in fact, this was the most pleasurable experience of them all. Nothing clogging it, crumbs all absorbed and done in a fraction of the time otherwise. A+ for the sofa.

This hoover is best for sofas and cars and cleaning up bits and bobs before a "big clean". If you have a mucky household like me, it genuinely is very helpful and allows us to have a much nicer home. With hard surfaces, I recommend a big broom instead.

You can get the VacLife Handheld Vacuum Cleaner on Amazon for £49.99. It's also available from the VacLife website for $59.99 (£47.32) but only ships to America.

Exactly when temperatures in London will soar to 28C in mini-heatwave and how long they'll stay like that

by
Exactly when temperatures in London will soar to 28C in mini-heatwave and how long they'll stay like that

It's fair to say summer hasn't been all that we've hoped for this year. An incredible start in June was followed by long periods of rain and cloud throughout July and August while the rest of Europe basked in a record-breaking heatwave.

Now we've stumbled into September with the hollow feeling that summer never quite reached the British Isles. But before you descend into complete despair you'll be glad to know there is a chance of recovery next week.

From Monday (September 4) Londoners will be greeted by sunny skies for a week as the mercury reaches 27C. There is the chance the mercury could rise to 28C on Thursday as parks across the city will be packed as many soak in the late-summer sun, according to the Met Office.

The mercury could reach 28C in London next week

Temperatures will begin to rise from tomorrow (Sunday, September 3) with a pleasant 25C and sunny spells. Although the Met Office doesn't have accurate forecasts for the end of next week, its long range predictions show temperatures should stay above average for the first half of September.

Forecasters at AccuWeather believe next Sunday (September 10) will see the end of summer conditions as rain is predicted for two days. The Met Office believes northern and western areas could be affected by rain during this period, but it won't necessarily drift south towards London.

London & South East England weather forecast

Today:

Areas of mist, fog and low cloud for some at first, this lifting and breaking during the morning. Sunny spells then developing, along with a few showers. Feeling warm with light winds, but cooler near eastern coasts. Maximum temperature 24 °C.

Tonight:

Any afternoon showers quickly fading. Then a dry night with clear spells, allowing the formation of further areas of mist and fog. Light winds. Minimum temperature 11 °C.

Sunday:

Early mist and fog gradually clearing to leave a dry day with sunshine, possibly hazy under some thin high cloud. Warm or very warm, but perhaps cooler near eastern coasts. Maximum temperature 26 °C.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Largely dry through this period, but with overnight fog patches clearing during the mornings to leave sunny spells. Temperatures becoming very warm, locally hot. Occasionally breezy, especially on the coast.

Strictly Come Dancing fans swoon over EastEnders star Nigel Harman in new trailer

Strictly Come Dancing fans have been left swooning over Nigel Harman as the actor counts down to the start of series 21 of the BBC One show.

The 50-year-old, who is famed for playing Dennis Rickman in EastEnders, will be taking to the dancefloor in hopes of winning this year's all-important glitterball. Posting to Instagram on Friday (September 1), Strictly shared a video of Nigel counting down to the new series kicking off.

In the short clip, the actor can be seen wearing a white shirt and black tie teamed with a pair of smart trousers for a very suave style. Nigel smiles at the camera as he holds two paddle boards with a number 1 and number 5 signaling 15 days to go until Strictly Come Dancing starts.

He cheekily throws the boards behind him letting off a worried shocked expression and walks away from the camera. The BBC show captioned the video: "The #Strictly countdown starts here. Only 15 days until @themeditatingactor hits the dance floor."

Strictly fans wasted no time in sharing their love for the former EastEnders heartthrob, with one person writing: "OMG I was so in love with him in EastEnders", as a second added: "Love this guy and his ideologies. Cannot wait!."

A third stated: "Looking forward to watching Mr. Harman", while another chimed in with: "Also he’s already my fave!."

The Strictly Come Dancing live shows will begin on Saturday, September 23, on BBC One. The show's pre-recorded launch show – which will see the celebs pair up their professional partners – will air on TV a week before on Saturday, September 15.

Tourist aghast to be charged £7 for 99 Flake in London with four costing £28

Tourist aghast to be charged £7 for 99 Flake in London with four costing £28

A tourist visiting London was absolutely horrified to be charged £7 for a 99 flake in the capital city recently. An illegal ice cream van has been asking customers to fork out almost double what you'd normally expect to pay for the cone.

Customers say it had been charging the inflated sum for an ice cream with a Flake – thought to be the priciest in the country, the Daily Star has reported. Tourist Joanna Szymbor says she was fleeced for nearly £30 for four of the cornets. She wrote online: "I feel ripped off. It was £28 for four ice creams.

"There were no prices displayed – I normally ask for a price but it was hot and we’d been sightseeing for eight hours. I paid thinking I heard it wrong. I’d already handed the ice cream to the kids so I didn’t want to be embarrassed."

Another customer said: "The days where you’d get change from a pound for a 99 are long gone, but £7 has got to be the most expensive one ever. I know everything costs more in London but this is really taking the mick."

Officers from the Metropolitan Police swooped in on the illegal ice cream trader when they found out. The Met Police and Lambeth Council have now seized and impounded the van as it was operating without a licence and parked dangerously on a cycle lane, just yards from the Houses of Parliament.

A spokesperson for the Council said: "An unlicensed ice cream van trading on Westminster Bridge was seized by the council. Illegal traders take advantage of visitors, lack hygiene certificates and obstruct cyclists."

The Met Police Roads and Transports team tweeted: "The van will remain in the pound until the conclusion of the council-led court case."
