Elderly South London benefits fraudster jailed for 11 years after cheating taxpayers out of £1 million

Image
An elderly South London benefits fraudster who cheated taxpayers out of £1 million after falsely claiming to be paralysed for almost two decades has been jailed for 11 years. Emmanuel Bay, 68, claimed he needed the cash to pay for round the clock care but splurged the cash on building up a property portfolio worth over £1 million with his wife Nancy Bay Sloane, also 68. Judge Michael Wood KC branded Mr Bay the “most dishonest man” he had ever come across while sentencing him last Friday (May 26) and condemned him for his “utterly despicable” behaviour. Mrs Bay Sloane, whom the judge described as a “Jekyll and Hyde” character was sentenced to four and a half years behind bars. Mr Bay told Lambeth Council he had become bed-bound following a car accident in 1997 where he had suffered a serious head injury, which had also caused memory loss. He was paid almost half a million in direct payments by the council between 1999 and 2016. The handouts are intended to allow people to arrange t...

An astrology expert revealed which celebrities are the ‘most manipulative’ according to their zodiac signs. Nicolas Aujula, astrologist and past life therapist has given an insight into which signs of the zodiac are the most likely to get their own way, as well as those which could be considered the most cunning. Unfortunately for those Leos, Taurus, Scorpios and Aquarius among us, they are the signs you’re least likely to be able to trust, according to Nicolas. Having analysed part of Bonusetu’s study on the most influential and acclaimed star signs, Nicolas revealed Taurus tend to be the most overlooked in pop culture, whilst Gemini received the most critical acclaim, reported WalesOnline . The astrologist explained some zodiac signs are more predisposed to success than others, purely based on their influence, persuasiveness and pull in a group setting. Nicolas explains Leo, Scorpio or Taurus like to get their own way, as they are the three signs which are ‘by far’ the most pers...

Liam Stone, 23, from Hayes , West London, went from surviving a horrific road accident in childhood to enjoying daredevil stunts like dangling off cranes with one hand. The London borough building so many council homes they account for 1 in 3 currently under construction in England

Image
One of England’s most crowded boroughs is building one in three of the country’s new council homes, new stats show. Work started on 726 council homes in Southwark last year, according to government figures despite the borough already having crammed in a lot of housing, and the council being the bigest local authority landlord in London. Across all of England, construction began on 2,234 new council houses in the same period. It means a third of all council homes started last year are in Southwark, which is the seventh most densely populated area in England. Southwark Council hopes the new properties will help house some of the 17,200 people currently waiting for a council house in the borough. Jordan McLaughlin, 24, moved into one of 10 newly built council homes on Welsford Street in Bermondsey last year. Mr McLaughlin, his mother and sister had previously been sharing a cramped two-bedroom council flat around the corner and needed somewhere bigger. READ MORE: South London coun...

BBC EastEnders fans despair as they complain they are 'watching two different shows' as they slam it as 'disjointed'

Image
EastEnders fans say they feel like they are watching two different shows as two current storylines seem to have very little crossover. Some viewers have said that the drama, which normally interlaces multiple storylines in an episode feels ‘disjointed’ as different plots seem to be being kept separate. Taking to the EastEnders subreddit to vent their frustration with the way the show is currently structured. Titled: “The show feels a bit disjointed” the post reads: “I feel like we are watching two different shows. Some weeks we get Suki, Nish and Eve storylines alongside Stacey and Lilly storylines and Ravi's relationships. “Then for the next two weeks it involves more of Lola, Jay, Keanu and Ravi's less romantic storylines. The only storylines that carry over the whole time is the Branning-Fox family. Martin Lewis shows how millions of people can get extra £1,000 per year by doing one simple thing

Image
Money saving expert Martin Lewis has revealed how people can get extra £1,000 per year tax free by just doing one simple thing. He has urged married couples to check their marriage tax allowance entitlement and stressed “millions are missing out” on saving money. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, he said: “If you are a basic 20 per cent taxpayer and are married or in a civil partnership [...] and you are with somebody who is a non-taxpayer - so simply they don’t earn enough in a year to pay income tax -then the non-taxpayer can give 10 per cent of their personal allowance to the taxpayer so that taxpayer then has more money they earn that isn’t taxed.
